A valve spring compressor is going to require the head to be removed.
Even if you bodge something up (which will take as long as removing the head) then you run the risk of the valve dropping into the combustion chamber unless you have no. 1 at TDC.
On the plus side it'll give you a chance to check everything over - on the downside, you need to be careful the head gasket re-seals properly since it has already been compressed (a bit of sealant should do the job), and this is something that is more enjoyable when it is light and warm (rather than dark and cold - metal in winter feels extra cold and you seem to cut yourself more easily when you can't feel anything).

If so you must use a new one.
I have a 30 year old Norton, solid copper gasket that you anneal (heat to cherry red) then reuse. though it always ends up weeping oil.
Just out of interest....
What is the price of a 944 head gasket?
Are the turbo gaskets the same?
Do the valve seals come with the kit and would these be worth doing anyway it you had the head off?
.......so many questions...........
