I have just purchased a 1986 944 from a trader. Whilst not concourse, it's really quite tidy, unmodified and drives well. Having spoken to the previous owner who had the car 14 years, the mileage of 96000 is accurate and the belt was changed 12000 miles ago. I have had the car serviced locally (no issues arose other than wiper blades) and on its first run with the new oil in, the first time I gave it some welly in second gear, huge plumes of blue grey smoke poured out. This stopped as I eased off. I tried again a mile down the road and the same thing happened again. Driving gently today, there is no sign of any smoke and the oil pressure is reading over 4, dropping to 2 on tickover. Has the local garage put too much oil in or should I be worried - the oil is now bang on the max mark on the dipstick. Thanks.

It could have been overfilled I guess, but that is not a good thing at all if it was. Oil pressure is quite low at 4 / 2, though probably not so much so as to worry. Is it synthetic oil as that seems to make the pressure lower. If not it's more normal to see full scale at revs and 3+ at idle when warm. Hot as in coming off a track session will be lower.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]You say 12k ago for belts, but how long in months? If it's over 36 they are still best replaced and if it's over 48 they are overdue.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Thanks. Oil used was Castrol Magnatec. Prior to oil change there was no hint of any smoke at any stage but level was halfway between min and max on dipstick and I didn't top it up as I intended to change oil asap. Will check date on belt change!

Compression test sounds in order to me.

Possibly rings as its under acceleration, valves show up more when on overrun and wont let huge plumes or `lots` of smoke in as yours seems to have.

I think more likely to be overfilled than anything else - especially if the oil is now at the max mark of the dipstick. I would be tempted to maybe take some out (pint?), and see how it goes after that.

Synthetic has always given me higher pressure than mineral especially when hot.

thanks. took car to Harrogate and through Yorkshire Dales over the weekend - did almost 250 miles and it didn't miss a beat or show any sign of smoke at any stage. re-securing spare wheel stopped annoying rattle from tailgate too!
