Vandalism

Some idiot has hit my wing mirror with their car or foot and has forced it back towards the bonnet with enough force to dent my door and rip the door skin where it meets the front of the window. With nobody to own up to this crime I am about to become severly out of pocket!!

Queery regarding repair- I have looked at a number of options and the cheapest one seems to be to buy a used 944 door and have it sprayed to match the rest of the car. I can then move the window mechanism, door cards, loom, mirror etc onto a shiny new door and discard the broken one. Has anyone tried this before? Is it more of a headache than I am assuming it will be?

I am hunting for a 1989 2.7 litre 944 door in Glacier metallic. How specific were doors to year or model and does anyone have an easier/cheaper solution to my problem?

Thanks for your wisdom, Jamie C

Sorry to hear about your incident. See how you get on getting hold of a colour matched door, if no success I have a pair of red doors from an S2 sitting in the shed doing nothing with matching wing mirrors if they're of any use ?

Yours

Chris

A good bodyshop could probably repair the area. On our MX-5 there was a dent at the top leading edge of the door (looked like it was caused by a hammer falling on it, and wouldn't pop out). Our local bodyshop repaired the dent and just sprayed the local area, achieving an excellent match on strato blue metallic paint. Years ago I had a mk1 Scirocco that had rusted around where the door mirror was attached (and alo along the bottomedge of the door). The bodyshop I used cut out the rot back to good metal and welded in and shaped fresh metal. The finish was excellent - I couldn't tell it apart from the other original door.

Get qanother door fitted no big deal swapping the bits over, by the time they have buggered about repairing it the cost will escalate just my opinion.

This ^^^^.

Just take car when bringing the newly-sprayed door back from the paintshop that you don't scratch the new paint ... same goes for when you swap the hardware over.

I *think* that all doors from 924's, 944's and 968's were the same someone more knowledgeable will be able to confirm this I'm sure.

Sorry to read your tale by the way. That's not a nice thing to happen to anyone's P&J.

Thanks for all the positive responses. I think you are right that the easiest option will be to purchase a new door and swap over the equipment from old to new.

I will keep my eye out for a Glacier metallic door however if one does not appear I will get a stripped door resparayed.

Does anyone know of a good paintshop/coachworks in Edinburgh or the area that would be able to match the colour and take on the job of respraying the door?

Thanks for the responses and sympathy, JC

Talk to Alasdair (944man) on here. He's from that end of the world, and is both in the trade and very helpful. He'd probably have a door to sell you as well.

Very sorry to hear this JC [:(] If it's any consolation I would not have thought that amount of force could be done intentionally by kicking it unless Jackie Chan lives nearby, so I would think another car just clipped it as they drove past.

Easiest and cheapest repair will be getting another door sprayed and they are not model specific so will be easy to find. Just be aware that if it needs a total colour change they will have to spray new colour over the whole door so it's highly unlikely to get a perfect match to the front and rear wings unless they paint them too. A patch repair to the centre of a panel gives the sprayer half a chance to fade the new colour over the existing.

Note, whilst as far as I am aware all doors are interchangeable, they are not identical. Late doors have a bar internally (impact protection) not present on early cars. Also I have come across one early door that did not have provision for a speaker (924 door). I am not sure if holes for trim and central locking are also universal.

None of these problems are insurmountable, but I would suggest if the door is to be sprayed, check that all trim etc will go in before sending it to the sprayers!

Regards,

Tref.

I used Steve Walkers Bodyshop in Bathgate for the MX-5 and was very pleased with the results. They are a VW/Audi approved bodyshop. You're welcome to come and have a look at the MX-5 to see their standard of work - PM me if you want to do that.

I would check with Alasdair as indicated for the door itself. My s2 is currently with a body shop (Prime Finish) in Bonnyrigg having sills treated, repainted plus a bit more. These guys were recommended to me by my friend who takes his 350z to them. Price competitive. I dare say they'd do the entire job for you if you asked. Let me know if you want me to PM details to you.
