As some may be aware, i am build a Group 2 e9 CSL from a bare shell. Unfortunately very little alloy on the car (although the original 1970's race cars had lots of magnesium alloy parts). Nevertheless, i have had a few parts vapour blasted by a company near to Chester. I didn't want the usual abrasive finish from regular sand/bead blasting, plus the steering box in the photo (in reassembled condition1) is worth £1500-1800 used....and you know my usual attention to detail [] The finish is quite remarkable, and none intrusive. I'll be getting a couple of cylinder heads done in the future. The parts went looking very sorry for themselves, very dirty, oily and that dreaded alloy corrosion in places. (sorry, forgot to take before photos)
The steering box is 40 years old, the gearbox bellhousing 30 years old and the gearbox cross member about 25. Quite a few alloy parts on the 968, so if you have it in pieces to renovate, vapour blasting might be a consideration. (by the way, 2 bellhousings, the steering box and cross member cost me £75). Oh, and the steering box had 123 needle roller bearings in there!
