Vario Cams on 1996 Boxster

Has anyone experienced Vario Cam failures on a 2.5 Boxster ? I am told by the main dealer that I need to spend over £1000 to replace both cams. I felt that on a car with 52,000 miles I should not have this problem. Having bought my first Porsche I was expecting better engineering and reliability than this !
Does anyone know a good specialist in the Cambrdige area who can give me a second opinion / do the job?

Many Thanks

I've had both of mine done on my '97, one under my ownership. The OPC said that a variocam change would be required at £1200 or something like that. Went to Ninemeister in Warrington and they replaced the variocam solenoid only and it cost about £450. Would imagine replacing both at the same time would be a bit cheaper. Hopefully someone will be along soon with a good independent near you.

I have used Barr-Tech, north edge of Cambridge City off the A14, 91 Cowley Rd, CB4 0DL, 01223 425300, they were recommended by the local REgister and did a good job on a wheel bearing for me. They work on Porsches, Ferraris etc.

Good Luck

Peter
