Variocam problem

A recent engine check light that has been manifesting itself at idle speeds (the engine sounds slightly rough/uneven) has now been diagnosed as a problem with the #1-3 variocam. The OPC say that a replacement will cost £1150. Plus VAT and labour I suspect.
Is there anyway of sourcing a cheaper or second hand item (I assume not as most will be sold with the engines).
Is there any non-OPC garage who would be worth contacting.
Glasgow area, but the car is driveable.
Thanks.

x-posted on boxa.net and porschaforum, sorry for the overlap.

Brian Millar said 'we don't have the tool to put the light off' which I presume means they don't have a diagnostic computer. Does George Morrison?

Like everthing else it must be able to be fixed if you know what your doing !

How about that chap in last months 911 and porsche world that fixes 928 electrical bits. worth a call.

Never thought of that, but good idea. Waiting for quote from Geo. Morrison at the moment. Contacted Hartech who quoted such a low price I think it must be wrong but they have a car in next week for the same thing so I'm going to phone back (they said they'd done them on engines out of the car but never one in situ).

Paul,

Ninemeister in Warrington had three expired Boxster engines when i visited a few weeks ago - might be worth giving them a call for the part, then using your local to fit.
