VEHICLE EXCISE TAX.

Hi all!
I have been doing some interesting research that may be of interest to you all.
As you all probably know now, thanks to Mr DARLING in his budget as of next year we will all be paying either £415 or £440 for a years tax,as from next year, then £430 and £455 respectively.
And as of 2010 if you but a new Porsche the first years tax will be about £950 then fall back to the £455 (thats without any yearly increase).
The main reason for this is to try and reduce CO2 emissions etc to protect the environment and our planet.
Global Warming is too big an issue to go into in any deapth in this post but i myself believe it is probably happening quicker as a result of the CO2 that human-kind produces.
Here are some facts that i have found:
The UK produces 1.95% of the worlds CO2 (you can look this up on the Net by searching under Climate Change Performance Index which is produced by a company called GERMANWATCH). (The Government don't seem to quote this figure).
Of this UK figure 22% is produced by TRANSPORT (Aviation, Lorries, Cars etc.) This is about 0.5% of the World's CO2 (Rounded UP to OVER-ESTIMATE)
So if we all stopped driving and flying tomorrow it would have about a 0.5% impact on the Worlds CO2.
So even if you said just UK CARS produced 22% of the UK's CO2 (Which is a very BIG OVER-ESTIMATE) the impact on the world would be 0.5%.
If as a result of these TAX HIKES, to save the planet, one fifth of UK drivers had to stop driving for what-ever reason this would have a 0.1% impact on the world's CO2.
And my main point is, the massive increase in Vehicle TAX and the increasing TAX on fuel (over two thirds of what you pay at the pump goes back to Government in duty and VAT) which the Government keep saying is to try to save our planet / protect the Environment will have a total of less than a 0.1% impact on the World's CO2 imissions.
SOUNDS MORE LIKE AN EXCUSE TO HIT THE MOTORIST WITH EVEN MORE TAX BECAUSE WE'RE AN EASY TARGET.
The Government needs to find out the main causes of CO2 from this country and take steps to combat them. Although i was surprised to find that the above Climate Change Performance Index rated the UK's Performance as "GOOD"! Funny how the Government don't tell us that though!
Sorry if this is a bit heavy but i feel strongly about this and just want as many people as possible to know the REAL STORY.
Tell as many people as you can because i'm very surprised at the amount of people i talk to who don't even realise that Vehicle TAX is being HIKED next year let along the real story about CO2 and motoring.
Is this an Environment thing or another way to get more money from us?

well said!
i was going to post my own post on this but you have covered it very well
as a prospective owner i am now looking for a pre march 2001 car or a 2005my. not by choice but i really cant bear the thought of giving the goverment this amount of money.
i would think it will effect used prices
i presently own a new vw eos and picked the 2.0T as it kept under the 225g limit on tax
bloody annoying that the goverment has now effectively moved the goalposts. even this car raises to over 300 quid.
another example of rip off britain

An online petition has been started to ask Downing Street to revoke the massive hike in Vehicle Road Tax brought about under the guise of "Green Taxes".

Could you please take the time to sign the petition against these unfair taxes which do nothing to address the true causes of pollution but just tax working people an extra £1.2 billion over the next two years.

The petition can be found at: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/greenstealth/

Please pass on to as many people as possible. [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Can anyone explain how the bands will affect Porsche owners of current and early models ?

It would be good to have a summary in the Club magazine.

I am looking to change and would be interested in terms age / emmisiions what the tax charge would be.

No matter what you buy they'll keep changing the bands until they get you...[]

Hi all,

Road Tax should be abolished anyway and instead put on petrol, why, simple.

Say you do 3000 miles a year with your Porsche and that a rep does 40000 miles a year with a Vectra/Passat in the lowset CO2 band. He is polluting far more than the Porsche driver and in fact using the roads more. Therefore the actual system is very unfair plus of course thousands of cars do no have a road tax.

In France no Road Tax, it is collected through the petrol, the more you use the more you pay, it is a fairer system in my opinion.

Having said that countries such as Spain and France have introduced a Tax when you register the car when new, up to 2500 euros for the high CO2's which of course covers all sports cars and 4 x 4's in the Cayenne league.

Here in Southern Spain road tax is collected by local town halls eg my toyota landcruiser costs about 130 euros my fiesta about 35 euros ,this varies from town to town as all revenue raised goes to the town .Wont know about the tax on a boxster till I get one in october.
cheers Mel

Mel,

Some info for you re tax in Spain

Boxster 2.7 paid in 2007 a total of 179,22 euros, as you know it is based on what they call "Fiscal Power" which is related to the size of the engine, the more cc's the more you pay, They use to have a similar system in France. That gives you an idea for October when you get your car. Also good news is that servicing is far cheaper in Spain than UK.

Take care
Salvador
