Vehicle Tracking - Best Choice?

Hello

My new Boxster [finally!] arrives next month. I' ve got a fairly good insurance quote, but they' ll insist on a vehicle tracker being installed - One of the following solutions:
  • Tracker
  • RAC Trackstar
  • Trakbak
To complicate matters, there are several varients of each. Some with both GPS and GSM, some with motion sensors, some integrate with the vehicle' s own immobiliser, some have additional ' driver verification' features.

In an ideal world, I' d have a grand lying around, and I' d just go for the top of the range of, say, the Tracker system. But I' d really appreciate hearing about others' experiences of what' s good and what' s not.

thanks
Colin

I never bothered. I took out my insurance with Performance Marque and they didn' t require a tracker (underwritten by Royal and Sun Alliance). I saved a grand - and the quote was the lowest out of 37 quotes - most wanted a tracker fitted. To be honest with you, if someone stole my car i' d rather have a new one to replace it than get the wrecked and thrashed old one back.

A thief would need the keys to drive away your car. It would be mightily difficult for someone to hotwire a Porsche. Hence, your personal safety and protection is more important than a tracker - in my opinion! Carjackers tend to target desirable cars.

Also, as there is no visible warning that you have a tracker, your car will be no more and no less a traget for a thief. The tracker will only be of use once it has been stolen. It will not deter a thief.

To balance the argument, a tracker will generally ensure the retrieval of your car should someone steal it. Hence, you do get some peace of mind.

According to the salesman at my local OPC, Tracker Monitor is the most popular choice for Boxsters if you do want one fitted.
