Vibration at 3000 revs

Hi all, haven't posted here for a long while as the Boxster has just gone on relentlessly, very different to 944 ownership. It's a year 2000 2.7 and was serviced last autumn with the coolant bottle giving up since needing replacement.

However, I have just returned from a 2,000 mile round trip in Europe and a vibration at 3000 revs came to light. It was particularly noticeable as it is just around the 130kmph limit on French autoroutes. The car is as smooth as a six cylinder engine should be until 3050 revs when the vibration starts quite suddenly. It then tails off and is smooth after 3500 revs. I did think it could be wheel balance but it is there in every gear just more pronounced as the gears get higher and, hence, the load greater. The vibration doesn't seem to be getting worse, or even better. It has probably been there for some time it's just trying to maintain the 130kmph on holiday that emphasised it.

When it was having it's coolant bottle replaced at John Mitchells he pointed out a couple of the coils were corroding and the plugs weren't replaced on the last service. Could this be ignition related, I haven't seen a warning light come up but would it be worth getting the engine management analysed for faults before throwing ignition coils and plugs at it? There were 2 days on holiday where idling was very lumpy on cold starts. Would it be worth taking out the MAF and cleaning it to see if it will make a difference?

There don't seem to be any reports on the forum but I believe there is an engine mount at the front of the engine that decays every 40,000 miles, any information appreciated.

Or should I be concerned that there are bigger problems brewing inside the engine?
