Vibration through the wheels

About a two months ago I noticed a slight vibration through the steering wheel at around 75mph. Nothing below that speed and over about 80/85mph (tested on a private track off course) it totally disappears.

The vibration is very slight but annoyingly causes the metal bracelet of my watch to rattle which is an unbelievable pain in the ar5e!

I had it checked out by Kwik Fit - nothing wrong with the balance or tracking apparently. The OPC has since serviced it and replaced the pads so the front wheels have been off and on in that time. The vibration is still there so can't be a loose wheel bolt.

Is the equipment at Kwik Fit not sensitive enough? Any suggestions?

Cheers all.

By the way I have 17" Boxster alloys on Conti Sport Contact N1's.

I have a solution: take your watch off before you drive!

Seriously though, are your tyres okay? Flat spots? Pressure? Or could it be a problem with the steering rack itself (bearings)?

Dapster,
I've run a boxster on 17" and 18" .I've currently got 18" on,but its better for tracks with the 17"which are Conti shod(I'll renew with Pirelli though).
If I get a bit of steering shake its been down to low back tyre pressure.
Have you checked yours?especially as its getting colder.

I had massive trouble getting my Pilot Cups on 18 Sport Designs balanced so no vibration, finally after the third attempt was fine. The fitters must use sensitive (modern) machines to avoid vibration.

Dapster. I have 03 Boxster with 17"ers shod with Michelin P. sports and had similar problem. All stopped after checking tyre pressures. Amazing how they drop when they cold sets in. About 5 Psi !

Hope thats all it is.

I have had the same problem on all my Boxsters 2.5,2.5,3.2 and
my current 03 "S" is the best, as in least affected example to date.
Just the very slightest hint so I guess this is a sensative area in the
Boxsters set up as explained here by the other guys ... Robert

I've had this on my 2000 S an awful lot. Was terrible when I first got the [used] car from AFN in March. Had the wheels rebalanced numerous times, then I moved to Leeds where the OPC JCT600 said the tyres were no longer properly round but 'stepped' due to being mishaped whilst driving with poor balance. So I got new Pirellis from them, and guess what, I still had wheel imbalance. They do keep re-balancing them for free though...
I guess it goes back to 'they all do that...!'

PS I think my RMS is going - but they want to charge ? Have you guys paid or can you negotiate it as a freeby seeing as all Boxsters seem to need new RMS ?
