Viewing an S and a Lux

Potentially have two viewings lined up this week, one an S and the other a Lux.

Now I've read stories about the tensioner failing on the S and thats obviously something to bear in mind when checking the history. I would have no hesitation in replacing the tensioner pads myself though.

Should I be nervous of going for an S if it turns out to be a good one?

If its a good one and you prefer its power delivery to that of the Lux (very different !) then no reason to be nervous especially as you it seems you are aware of any potential issues. As you say check the history and take it from there [:)]

I don't think there's an issue with the 16v cars particularly. You need to check the timing chain and associated parts have been replaced, but if you feel capable of doing it yourself no problem there.

I had the cam sprockets checked before buying mine, but only as they were servicing it anyway and I thought it worthwile when it was in the workshop.

It's only one of the potential large bills on any 944, so has to be taken in to consideration, but alongside things like the clutch, head gasket, fuel and brake lines etc. The key thing is to go on condition and recent history, and keep a bit back for the inevitable odd fault you're bound to find with any older car. The most expensive bill is always going to be bodywork and paint.

I am in my 14th year of owning my S, never been nervous and all cars on the planet have the potential to hurt your wallet.

If you are allowed, drive them both like you stole them and you will have the S on your drive
