Views on Coloured Wheels?

I am fed up with cleaning my wheels, running the car round the block to clean off the disks and then having to re-clean them with a damp cloth to remove the fresh brake dust and rust - The Carrera S wheels are a bit fussy with all the cut-outs etc and the wheels are taking longer than the rest of the car!

So, I have considered having my wheels spray baked Charcoal/Anthracite to cut down on the "carpal tunnel syndrome" as there is a highly recommended firm in Birmingham that can do the lot for about £400.

My only concern is that my car is Basalt (avatar) and I haven't seen anything similar.

Can anyone point me towards some pictures of black Porsches (any 911 or Boxter type) with black or grey wheels?

There is an orange 997S on the Porsche GB network for sale with black wheels (General Lee anyone, just needs that rebel flag on the roof) but that doesn't really show me what I need to see. Also that cars' wheels are only painted on the face - the inner surface is standard finish (defeats the object a bit).

All comments, scathing or otherwise appreciated!

Zymol Wheel Wax Coat

"Protective Zymol Wheel Wax Coat - just spray your wheels with this easy-to-use formula. Your wheel investment will be protected from road soil and corrosion".

The `S` wheels are hard work to clean but IMHO they are the best of the most recent Porsche wheels. Louise has got them on her Boxster 987 S, guess who get to clean them.

Keep a supply of old bath towels in the garage and wipe the wheels down after washing the car.

A black finish on the wheels would only look any good if you had a contrasting bodywork colour such as Speed Yellow or Guards Red.

I once saw a 996 turbo S in basalt with black painted wheels at an OPC.

I swear, if I had brought my chequebook that day, my wife would have killed me when I drove home. It looked absolutely fantastic.

If I had gone for basalt this is how my car would have looked, ie would definately have gone for coloured wheels. BUT it does need the contrast metal rim in my opinion.

Sorry about the lary picture size but like the orange 997 with black wheels at Goodwood last year, this one I think looks the business. Black would look even more sinister - if you like the look then go for it!

I think I am going to get one wheel painted black (the front N/S is slightly damaged anyway), drop it on the car and decide from there on.

If I don't like it I can then get it painted back to silver and I have only wasted the cost of one spraying (£80ish).

I will try to post a picture when it is on the car for opinions.

I'd be very interested in how that looks. Completely agree on the cleaning. I think the 997 is the best looking car u can buy (with the poss exception of the GT3 and AM Vanquish), but the wheels could look better in my view. I prefer something more simple. However, i think i'm in a minority on that.

Whilst I don't have a picture, my PDE car at Millbrook was a Basalt Carrera S with Black Carrera S wheels and polished rim. It looked absolutely superb...I thought of getting my own done too but have since been distracted by the daily grind.

The PDE cars are returned to Reading at the weekends, and I've seen it in the car park there out-back a couple of times. Anybody local who could find it and post a snap ?

BTW, you can add painted wheels on the Porsche Configurator at www.porsche.co.uk so try it specifying a Carrera S in Black, then go to wheel options and tick the body-colour one for a digital preview...

Got these done on the PC as I thought it may be more cost effective.

An interesting effect but in the balance I think I will stay with silver?

I spoke with my OPC about this, and they do it for about £500, they recommended black, but with the rim left in silver, as per the red car in the earlier post.

I had my last car wheels painted black for the same reason - looked awesome as does the 997 above.

As for Zymol wheel wax - save your money and use a cloth and some WD40 - thats what I use on my bike - works a treat and cheap as chips!!!

I saw a black 997S cab with black SportDesign wheels in Old Bond Street and it looked fab.
I would imagine the result of a simple kerbing would be expensive though.
I've ordered my new 997C4S with Classic wheels (not painted) partly as I imagine they'll be easier to keep clean.
Cheers,
Shaun

Go for it!! But as above, leave the rim polished, it breaks up the mass of the dark colour in the wheel well.

try the 993 site where there's a thread dealing precisely with this. More pictures and contacts re wheel refurbishment. Good luck.

Michael

Sorry to say I bottled out on the evidence of the photoshop excercise above - I had Wicked Wheels respray the wheel back to the original colour and they did such a great job I have decided to keep the car original.

Mind you, if my car was silver or red, I would probably have just gone for it.
