VIN Number Oddity

Hi Guys

Noticed a strange thing today. My car, which I believe to be a 90 model has an "L" in the VIN number stamped on the bulkhead, however on the sticker in my maintenance book and on the inside of the boot it states "K". All the other digits are the same. K is 89 model year and L is 90.

944 man please enlighten me (or anyone else who may know)!

Car was registered 1st August 1989. V5 states L also.

Could it be an issue with printing the stickers and someone forgot to change the K to an L?

Normal cutover on the build is Sept isn't it?
So I would have thought K as it must have been built a month or so before.
Was there a model change of any kind around then? Sometimes they shove a few "pre-production" of the next model year through before the August factory shutdown.

If I could find my "Original 944" book by Peter Morgan I'd look it up for you... [&:]

It is number 100017 which I am led to believe is the first of the new model year. The Finnish chap (OS951 I think) was saying that the first 16 numbers are reserved for prototypes or something like that.

So if it is the 1st released 90 model year car it would sit with your theory. Still doesn't explain why it's L on the car and K on the sticker though!
