VIN Numbers

A number of you have had your V5C (UK Registration Certificate) returned with an incorrect VIN (Chassis) number. Apparantly, DVLA are mixing Zs & 5s. Your VIN number should be WPOZZZ99Z5S then the 6 digit number. Could you all check and let me know if you have an error. My e-mail is djs5@coln.freeserve.co.uk. This is an important subject as it may give grief when selling. Your correct VIN number is on your windscreen in the bottom near side corner.

They have also historically mixed up the O with a 0 in WPO which causes the same problem. I have come across a number of these when doing HPI checks.

Yep - My old 4S had only two Z's on the V5 ! This had gone un-noticed(even by me) until when i put it up for sale a potential purchaser flagged it up when he did the HPI check.

Good Post.

Just checked the reg doc on my new GT3, both Chassis and Engine number have errors in.

This happened once before and they simply reissued the reg doc.

Happy new year.

I am now getting the first results of a survey back from Register members. I also have quiet a few replies to my Forum posting. Sadly, I have to tell you that there are very many of you with V5 VIN number errors. As this will pose problems later, perhaps you should rectify the problem now.

My chassis # is WP0 rather than WPO, i.e. WP Zero instead of WPO 0- I'll check the engine # when I work out where it is!.

The paperwork from your OPC will give you the engine number, but it is also printed on your vehicle book pack documents. However, as per reading VIN numbers on the windscreen, the only reliable method is to read it on the engine itself. The only way to do that is to put the car on a ramp. Unless, of course, you are rather thin!

Derek, Kevin, ....

I took the car to Guildford and had them put it on a ramp because at the end of the day that's the only way to check it. It was correct (although as I said earlier my V5 has WP zero). Interestingly, when you look at the left of the windscreen or on the right at the stamps on the shell you cannot distinguish the O from a 0). I couldn't find the engine number on the service book (I did have it on various Porsche invoices though).

FYI,
Any time you want to check/verify a 17digt Porsche VIN you can use my VINDecoder on renntech.org.
