VIN Plate versus build/production number stamps

I'm looking at buying a car - and just needed some advice on the two stamps on the body versus the VIN plate.

Its a 1985 3.2 Coupe, UK car.

Question is, Is there ever a difference between the production build number and the VIN number? I know the production number stamped on the parcel shelf and knee area below the glove box are the same - ending in 0743. The VIN plate on the side of the wheel area and the V5 and other documents ends in 0722. Should these numbers always be the same? If so, I have a concern the body shell is not correct and not matching the V5. The engine number, gearbox number etc are all matching to the V5 and other paperwork.

I think they may not always be the same. Does anyone have a way of getting to the VIN through the production/build number or visa versa? I really need to be able to definitively cross reference these two numbers. Perhaps the only way is through the factory records - unless someone has a magic book with this in. Cheers.

A quick definitive answer would be magic!
Thanks
Gary

Hi Gary,
lit is not unusual to have a different build number that does not correlate to the vin number.
Check it out online. Renin list is a good source.
there is also a plethora of info regarding decoding vin numbers.
highly unlikely that an 85 3.2 would have been reshelled...10 years ago even minor damage would be a cat d write off as values were quite low compared to repair costs but less likely these days. Surely you could tell anyway.
All info should tie up with vin, service docs, owners manual, and history,
hope this helps?
Regards
Graham

The vin numbers are not all ways matching but check the chassis numbers stamped on the f/o/s flitch panel these are the numbers that Stuttgart will regonise
