Voltage, battery, Alternator Issue on a 944S help me please

I recently commisioned a 37K 944s in white from 12 years in and out of storage and decided to run it in.

Got an MOT with new flexible brake lines and away we go.

However i have been having issues with the voltage system. It has started nearly every occasion but sounds sluggish and during the 25 mile trip to work it does not read on the gauge any higher than 12.25 V and has been as low as 11V. My previous Lux always read 13.5V. I have had two occasions when it would not start and needed jumping. I now disconect battery inbetween use.

tonight i stripped the airbox back and replaced the brush pack / regulator and on idle the battery terminals read 13.8 going up to 14V at 3000 revs. Which i believe is fine. However the gauge was stuck at 12.25V. Is there something else that results in the gauge reading so low that i am missing. I havent checked starter earth but would welcome comments on what to do next.

does anybody have a picture of the earth points in a 1988 944S as i could check all of them while i am at it.

Please help cheers

Elliot,

Go to Rick Cannell's site and download the manuals from there. They have diagrams of the car, with the earth points highlighted. (As well as being very useful for a load of other reasons!) http://www.cannell.co.uk/Manuals.htm is the link.

Voltmeters theoretically draw no current, therefore shouldn't be affected by high-resistance connections. In practice this is not so, and clean terminals will help you. Also consider the gauge - is it working correctly? If you can, connect a DVM across the inputs to the gauge and see what it is being given; you may find the gauge is under-reading despite being given a high voltage.

Sluggish starting can be caused by several different things. Earth points for sure. Or an old starter motor. Do a search on here - you'll find plenty of things to check.

Oli.

This morning got in the car and gauge reading 13Volts. Thought regulator change had done the trick but by the time i had got to work gauge back down to 12 V. Disconneted battery left for 2 hours and then reconnected and started car and again on 13V.

Suspect this isnt gauge or regulator now so what would cause a drain on battery with regulator working and car running?
