Voltmeter

What should the dashboard voltmeter normally read during normal running? Mine now shows just over 12 but I think it was showing more than that previously or am I imagining things ? [&:]

A shade under 14v when new. The meter and its associated wiring may be at fault now though and not the alternator.

From memory, mine reads more like 15 to 16 volts. Someone will tell me I'm due an electrical issue some time soon now! []

Cheers

Mine shows 12 volt with key in and ignition on and 14 volt after start up and when driving. It dips a bit when electrical items are switched on, eg a/c on full and lights on maybe shows 13.5v.

Check it with a meter across the battery when the car is running. 12v when running is too low and I would suspect your gauge is out. I calibrated mine a while back. There is a variable resistor on the back of it which I used to set it to exactly show what my meter was showing across the battery. Been fine since.

All these sound good in comparison - mine starts off about 14 dropping in a few minutes to a little over 13. When AC or lights are on - is a little over 12 (at least its over).... I`m told these gauges were not terribly accurate when new and the usual aging issues (solder connections in the dash, dirty grounds, etc) just make it worse over time. I just use them as a trend meter - less concerned about the value and more concerned about consistency of the value - sudden changes mean something is going wrong.

Sound advice thanks all. On reading the handbook (just thought of that!), it says it should show between 12 and 14 when running with a few things like headlights on.
