Wandering 996TT

I've had my 996TT for two years. Over the last six months the front has started to 'wander' on uneven, particularly smooth road. I had the car checked out by Reading OPC and they told me that this was "normal for a turbo". I have read that the 911 can exhibit this wandering characteristic.

I am still on the same set of front tyres (yes true, still OK tread but getting low - will be due for change for the winter) so I'm wondering if this 911 characteristic (particularly turbos???) gets worse as the tyres wear.

Any similar experiences or advice welcome?

Thanks!

Worn front tyres will cause the front end to follow any imperfections in the road surface - particularly compressed surfaces from heavy loads on the inside lanes of moorways for example.

Some tyres are more prone tha others - Pirelli P Zeros are abut the worst i have come across for this, progresively getting worseas they wear but the last 3mm being really bad.

I experienced similar problems with my previous car - an Audi A8 4.2 quattro - when the tread depth was low. The Audi mechanic asked me if the car was wandering about on the road, without me prompting him, simply because he saw the tyres had less than 2.5mm tread. This was particularly noticeable with Pirelli P Zero Rossos compared to the OE Bridgestones, but they did grip better, stop better and aquaplane less than the OE Bridgestones so a small(ish) price to pay!

Many thanks for sharing your experiences!

Looks like a new set of tyres then.

Appreciate your help

Cheers

Had very similar experience with Bridgestones and an STi Impreza. Had to hold the wheel firmly with both hands on uneven roads. Changed to Michelins and the problem went away. However, the tyre walls were so soft, that I wore away the sidewalls to the canvas before the tread.
