Want to buy a 996 but concerned about costs

I am considering buying a 2001/2 996 and have about 40k to play with once I've sold my Boxster S. The deals that some of the independents are offering look very attractive and seem about 5k cheaper than the OPCs. However I have had a salesman at an OPC warn me of the costs of running a 996 (he was trying to sell me a Cayman S which is a little bit out of my budget). So I want to get a Porsche extended warranty. Is it possible to buy from an independent and get an official warranty after an inspection? Presumably I could buy a car but the OPC could refuse to offer me an extended warranty if an inspection turned up some faults? Does anybody have any advice?

No problem to purchase the extended warranty for any qualifying car, you need to pay for the inspection (£180, if I remember well) and of course, correct all points that may be required.

If it were me, I would insist on the seller putting it in through the OPC inspection, even if I had to pay for it myself

Just to add to the above-thye car must have a full OPC service history to get a warranty even if you have the inspection... At least thats what my OPC told me.

Hi,

I was in your situation last summer when I was looking for my 996. I looked at dealers and actually went for a private car in the end.
I negotiated a price of £29k for a late 2000 car with a huge option list and only 42k miles with full OPC history.
What I then did prior to purchasing the car was have an OPC do a 111 point check (which they have to do prior to issuing an extended warranty) recitfy the major faults and they will give an extended warranty. The low price allowed me to change the brakes, clutch, tyres and refurb the wheels. aswell as purchase the warranty and service it too!

I would look for a 996 at a dealer or private if you can (that hasn't got the dealer margin built into the price) Then get it 111 point checked at an OPC....rectify the faults...and get the extended warranty. You'll be able to do all that with the money you save by not buying from an OPC!
Also, I think the OPC salesman is motivated by his sales target when recommending a Cayman to you!
You won't need to spend £40k to secure a 2001/2002 996.

Good Luck

Not true if te OPC are selling the car...[&:]

My 996 has been the most reliable car I ever owned. My wifes just services a 1.8 golf and paid £500, my last service was approx £300. Get the warranty incase of 'the big one' and you cant go wrong.

Had two 996s, both excellent. 3.6 was superb. Porsche Approved Warranty gives peace of mind.

PSE is absolute 'must have'.

Recently bought an 03 facelift C2 with porsche warranty from a private sale.

Cost less than £40k.....

(Oh and it's bloody wonderful!!)
