Want to buy a Boxster S

Hi, I am new to this forum and want to buy my first Porsche Boxster s. I have owned and still own Volkswagen's, but classic and new, so not a new car enthusiast by any stretch. I will however be new to Porsche having never owned one!

I have always loved the Boxster and in particular the S with it's added zing, but wanted some advice. I plan to get a third gen for my 40th in 5 years, but just don't think I can wait any longer! I have wanted a boxster since they were first introduced but wasn't old enough and certainly didn't have the money! Still don't have the money for a new one, but been looking at first and second gens for sale. I am hoping to have a bonus from work in June and if I do I could possibly Pay cash for a decent first gen, but not sure if I should wait and save some more money towards a second gen?

I have come here for some practical advice really. Do I wait or bite the bullet and if so, what should I avoid?

Your help is appreciated

First Gen 986 3.2 Boxster S are available to 2004 ending with the Anniversary Special 550 Spyder.
Second generation 987 have 3.4 as an S. Search out low mileage, full service history examples. Servicing not cheap a OPC, but there are many
specialists using genuine OE parts . Rear 18" "N" spec. Rear tyres are Circa £500 a pair. Make sure there is no oil leaking through the Rear main

Hi Victoria,

If the budget can extend to it, I'd definitely go for a Gen2 car with the DFI engine which gives slightly more power and torque, better fuel economy and lower emissions [lower vehicle tax] compared with the Gen1. Plus, this redesigned engine overcame the well-documented [but overplayed] RMS/IMS problems associated with the Gen1 engine. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with the later 987 Gen1 cars, of which there are plenty of excellent examples.

As always, buy on condition and a well-documented service history either from a Porsche Centre or recognised Porsche Indy to ensure that the car has been well cared-for. The usual advice is to spend a few hundred pounds getting the car inspected thoroughly before purchase by a specialist who will know what to look for and can advise you accordingly about potential defects.

Good luck with your search.

Jeff

Hi, I had the same thoughts as you but a friend of mine who owns a Boxster S convinced me to go for the GEN II S as it was more reliable with the new engine and as I'm not interested in high running costs it made more sense all round . I purchased from an OPC last year because I wanted peace of mind and the Porsche 2 year warranty but it was at the higher end price wise but for me worth it. Unfortunately I've not used it that much due to life style so am coonsidering moving it on if you want to P.M me.

I think when she says generation 1 she means 986, generation 2 she means 987 and generation 3 she means 981.
If I am correct, and you are thinking about a 986S, '99-'04. They are great cars, buy on condition and recent service history. The newest of them are over ten years old so it's unusual to get full dealer history. Independent servicing or local garage with lots of receipts has to be better than a dealer stamp which you get for basic service requirements.

Alan.
