Want to replace door speakers

WARNING...I'm no audiophile and and know next to nothing about stereo systems! [:D]

I'm ready to install my new RS door cards and want to replace the door speakers at the same time. I'd like to get rid of the tweeters and the crossovers, as that removes the hassle of trying to move the crossovers to under the dash (they will no longer fix to the door card). I believe I can do this by changing the woofers to coaxial 2 way speakers....something like this:

To do this I believe I can uncouple the wires that feed the crossover and connect directly to such speakers.

Is it this simple? Do I need to know anything else? Are speakers such as those in the link the right size? Do you have a suggestion for reasonably priced speakers?

Hi Steve,

All you need to do is remove the crossover and fit a full range speaker. The original speakers are not full range and therefore need a crossover to split the frequency range. You should find a speaker that is rated around 20/50Hz up to 16/20KHz.

I replaced my units with Alpine BUT the biggest issue with speakers these days is the depth. As speaker technology has improved over the years the increase in RMS (average) power calls for bigger magnets and therefore deeper drivers. You may have to start by removing you old speaker first and measuring your available depth in the door and try and find one that will fit. The rear shelf drivers are even harder to replace for this same reason.

Personally I would look for either Apline or JBL units - tend to be very hard wearing and sound good too.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Greg. I'm aiming to put the new door cards in tomorrow and will measure the depth as you suggest and then put the old ones in as dummys to cover the hole in the door card until I can find some suitable speakers. [:)]

Not got the new speakers yet but the old ones definitely need replacing! [:D]

Looking good Steve [:)]

I have to be careful about which CDs I play in my car to avoid the speakers getting freaked out! Think I could do with replacing them....
