Hi

I am considering going to take a look at this car for my wife who wants an auto! http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/classic-car-page.php/carno/83512

it has a cracked dash, no history, allegedly his Dad owned it for five years before he bought it and he has had it for 18 months, done his own servicing.. as a cheap run around is it worth an offer or should i not touch it with a barge pole?

thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,

On the face of it it's an expensive car with very few details in the ad, which points to someone who doesn't know 944s.

Forget the dash, early cars are almost all suffering this and it costs nothing to live with it in a 27 year old car. No history? Fine for the time he's owned it, and he's got receipts for the parts he's fitted. Why nothing before then? No mention of bodywork condition, it could be fine but might also be completely shot. When did it last have a belt change? Critical on these cars and 4 years is the limit. I'd be very careful to check the modifications, totally pointless and might be poorly fitted.

It could also be a cracking car, and for sale by someone who's prepared to sell it cheap to get rid. The problem is, there are so few 944 autos that finding a good one is always going to be a very uphill struggle.

Personally, unless it's absolutely mint I'd avoid. A 944 for, say, £1.5K plus the £1K we always say allow for first year surprises makes it a £2.5k car. Most will be in need of a bit of bodywork and paint, it's very easy for a 944 to become a £5K car very quickly. That's not far off what you'll pay for a pretty decent 968 Tiptronic, which is a world away from a 944 Auto. I'd remortgage the house to find the extra, IMO it'll be less money over a number of years for an infinitely better car.

I agree, Also the turbo front may have been professionally fitted but it still looks like a bad fit.

I think I will try and slot her into either a 968 tip, although those seem rare from my quick scout around or a Boxster tip.. one on auto trader for 6k with a non working elec roof.. thanks guys.

Eek, it's big leap from 944 auto to spending the extra initial lump sum for a 968 tip, and treating it as a better car with lower long-term costs. But it's an enormous leap in potential costs to go for a £6K Boxster with advertised faults! [8|]

Steve, if you are anywhere near the South Coast it may be worth checking out this one at JMG:

Sounds like it needs some cosmetic work but is mechanically sound

The 944 AUTO has a cush drive, this is a large rubber donut that goes where the clutch would be.

The rubber deteriates with age, they last about 15-20 years.

If there is no receipt for one fitted withinin the the last 10 years I would budget £1200-£1500.

944 automatics make excellent everyday cars and are very under rated.

I had both and would always take the Auto for urban use.
