wanted 944 S2 in good condition

My 944s may not be viable to fix after a cambelt failure. I'm looking for an S2 in really good condition with low miles and service history. The purpose is to preserve, enjoy and get into the club scene. It needs to be a coupe and ideally in red. I've looked at quite a few with most not even progressing to a test drive due to rotten sills. Piston heads, ebay, autotrader, classic and sports car I've been looking at them for weeks and driven over a thousand miles.

Is there anyone in this forum looking to upgrade or move on who has the support of car I'm after?

Thanks

Howard

I haven't seen every S2 in the country but if there is a better S2 out there then it must be some car.....

This car is perfect in every detail IMO [:)]

Hi Howard I have a 944s engine sat doing nothing in the workshop if that would help ?

This should give you a starting point and then some:

Thanks for the response. That might be a get out of jail card! How many miles does it have on it and is there evidence of service history? EMC have been very helpful offering a head rebuild with new valves, machining, head gasket, seals, clutch, belts, tensioner, water pump, cam chain, cam tensioner pad and clutch for just over 3k. Ok that's a stinger on a car purchased 9 months ago for 2k but it was coming up for a belt change, rollers, tensioner and pump, which would have been around 1k. It might be a decision of the heart rather than the head. A known good engine might be a solution, guessing it would need belts and rollers doing first whilst out of the car.

All the best

Howard

Hi Howard, and welcome to the forum.

Your S, is she sound on the bodywork front? how much love do you have for her?
In my opinion if she is good and you are happy with her, I would take John's offer of his spare engine his asking price is very fair (had I the space I would have bought it last time it was offered)

Unless you are prepared to part with a small fortune, in my opinion you would be better keeping the devil you know! rather than plough money into an unknown S2, and potentially have further troubles.

When my engine let go, (cam chain failure) I acquired a replace the engine fresh out of a write off which had covered 40k less miles than my original, had clutch, belts, rollers a few other minor items and had a Porsche indie fit everything for a bill of ÂŁ3k including engine purchase.

Good luck with what ever you decide.

Thanks.

Going with the devil you know; it's an option. The bodywork is better than average with no outward signs of rust on the sills and light rust inside. An application of wax may give it a couple of years before replacement. The exhaust is original and coming to end of life. I've worked through many of the typical faults. The cookie cutters need a return but it is quite presentable.

All the best

Howard

I did go to see this one and test drove it but there were a couple of issues and we could not agree a price. However it was close being the desired model and colour.

Thank

Just for clarity this is not mine Howard is talking about.

Cheers, Paul

Agreed. It looks superb, but Paul has decided not to sell it and I can't really blame him. The car is a credit to him.

Hi Howard, mileage was 110,000 on the car history was patchy but engine ran fine with good oil pressure and no obvious leaks , cam-chain and tensioner looks to have been replaced . I would do the belt and service if I was putting back in a car as is much easier while out. if you want to come and take a look feel free. just a thought and might keep your car on the road for a lot less than a rebuild up to you just let me know

All,

Thanks for your help which has brought my search to a good end. What this exercise demonstrates is that buying a 944 is a bit of a minefield. Having driven many hours on numerous occasions to see reportedly immaculate cars that were rot boxes in disguise I have finally found my companion for the next few years. Thanks Paul, you were a delight to deal with and I look forward to hear about your next acquisition.

Again thanks everyone, and hope to meet you at sunny shows this summer.

All the best

Howard

Howard, you probably have what must be one of the most original immaculate S2's in the country, i know Paul's car very well and have not saw one like that for many years do us all a favour and look after it whilst enjoying it, this car genuinely looks and drives like a 12 month old car fellas.

Hi Howard , congratulations on the new car , what are your plans for your S ?

Cheers
