Wanted Urgently LSD Transaxle

Yes, another one bites the dust! In fact it is screaming like a banshee!
Does anybody know anybody with one of these lying about???
I keep on missing them recently!
Help!!!!

Funny that, I've got one on route to me as we speak - £650 from a breaker. Beaky's box has started to jump out of gear, so it is time for a replacement.

I can't make up my mind wether to go for a rebuild before putting the new one in or install the new one and keep the old for rebuilding.

I've got mine. It looks very nice and even has what looks like a new cooling coil on it.

My previous transaxle didn't have a cooling coil so, by default, I've ended up with an upgrade. [:)]

John I am really pleased for you mate!
Just wish I could lay my hands on one at the moment

Note by John - I've just noticed the time on this posting. Can I assume that Fen was catching up on the forum before leaving for Crawley? That it keen to the point of obsession. [&:]

I feel that I will most likely subcontract. Now should I have the clutch done while I'm about it?

just phoned Douglas Valley and they couldn't find one, must have sold the other one they had.. Thanks for the idea though John

Oh yesss [][]

Been there, done that. Problem is that you cant unbolt the cooler `pipe`. If I had a gear box on the bench I`d certainly adapt it so that the cooler pipe could be unbolted otherwise you have to remove the trailing arm to drop the halfshaft, what an unbelievable pain in the rect*m

Hey guys I am a bit lost here,

I have had a cooler on all my transaxles and never had a problem with removing the coolers to get the half shafts out.
They are flange fitting at the back of the gearbox and as I remember there is an allen key and 10mm nut securing to a bracket and if I remember rightly the front of the cooler is just a straight push in flange with a retaining bracket.
I found that second time round I could get the box out in 40 mins with the right tools. first time was 2 hours without the right tools. The biggest pain in the ass is the rubber mounting on the crossmember, damn fiddly.
Just out of interest has anybody fitted a 6 spd out of a 968, I know it is a different torque tube and drive shafts, just fed up of eating boxes!!!!

If you eat 951 boxes I expect you'll blow 968 ones up - they weren't exactly known for reliability plus they are heavier, rarely have LSD and have lower final drive ratio - still want one?[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I managed to drop the rear beam without disturbing the oil cooler and didn't want to have to do it so didn't look at what was involved, but it sure gets in the way.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]John - you'd be a mentalist not to replace the clutch IMO. OK it's a bit of extra work (but you have the 250 downpipe now at least?) but extra labour is insignificant compared to doing it as a job in itself. Clutch costs a bit but not a fortune. Remember the law of "while I'm in there..." [;)][FONT=verdana, geneva"]

That was pretty much the conclusion I had come to, particularly as I'm starting to loose track of the number of recent clutch smoking exploits - isn't it funny wen you pull away from at an uphill junction and the car starts to bog down that you don't consider you may not have sellected 1st gear [&o]

I must get back under the car then. I understand exactly what you are saying re retaining flanges cos thats what I expected to see but mine go straight in with no retaining plate unless the retaining plate is huge

Retaining plate being `oval` plate with bolt/s that holds pipe flange/seal into box?

I removed the driveshaft (by splitting the CV joints) with the cooler in place without too much difficulty. I think I had the car sitting on its wheels though rather than jacked up on stands, or maybe I jacked it up to get it out.

Anybody have any ideas where I can find a good transaxle??????????????
I am getting a headache driving the car!!!!

Have you tried Van Zweeden in Holland. They seem to have a pretty massive stock of cars in various stages of disassembly?

Give Richard at Club Autosport a call if you haven't already - 01384 410879. Always worth a try for hard-to-get bits.

Hi John,

Tried Van Zweeden this afternoon, he has got one for 1500Euros or about £1100.00
I think its a bit steep when condition is unknown and then you have to transport back from Holland.
But thanks for the creative thinking, John. I am getting nowhere at the moment!!!

If that was for a refurbished box, I wouldn't have thought it was too bad a price. For a box of unknown condition I would agree that that seems high in comparison to what I paid. That said, I was pleasantly surprised with the price of my box as I was expecting IRO £1,000 - which, with transport, makes the Van Zweeden box about right.
