Thank you [], well that's why I like it, an original early 1 with no cracks on the dash, interior perfect, 4 speed box, 2 spoke steering wheel with steel indicators. Only thing I have always wondered about on this car are the mirrors, are these original or from the later one?

Not daft, yes went back a few days at different times and no go... they did have others types left there.chrishak said:May be a daft question, but did you ask in the kiosk? I left my Boxsrer cap on a fuel pump and realised when I next filled up at another station several days later.
Returned to the first station and they had a selection in the kiosk, including mine!

I am looking for a new/replacement fuel cap for my 78 924 which is not the covered over flap type like my 81 model. I foolishly left it behind at a pump and when I went back the following day it was gone. I would like to get an original with keys. I don't think I posted this here before, it was some time ago that I lost it, and now the summer is coming so time to get it out and unwrap it.....
See image here
Advice appreciated, maybe I should go new/replacement or could I do this?

Thank you, I have looked on Ebay and yes I was told a MK1 Golf is the same but..... Yes not screw no point getting 1 unless it is the exact 1. What about ordering direct from Porsche with chassis No. or is such a thing possible.scm924s said:Hard to find in the UK, need to search on ebay.com, it was used on some VW models there, be aware that there are some similar looking caps but they are bayonet fitting, not screw.

I believe they’re later ones - the originals were just thinner and black plastic rather than body-coloured.

I have always been doubting if they were original. There was a 77 one on pistonheads for a while and it had just one chrome mirror......pse_SC said:West-Awake said:Only thing I have always wondered about on this car are the mirrors, are these original or from the later one?

Thank you, that is great info, I will try a Porsche dealer so. I wonder who would be best to entertain that kind of inquiry. If they are not the original they are the only modified thing so they are going to have to be replaced even though I should have this sorted a long time ago although as they are getting more valuable these days, an original one is very hard found and especially a pre 80's one so worth doing.pse_SC said:Just had a look on the PET (parts compilation) for up to ‘79 and the Porsche part no. for screw petrol cap for your early car appears to be: 471 201 551. They may be no longer available through Porsche, but worth a call to your local Porsche centre (or Porsche Classic, perhaps?)... not sure on cost, though!

The rubber sealing ring at the top of the thread, is available new from Porsche, it's the same as the later style caps.

Brilliant, thank you very much. So just to clarify this is the 1 as I will go ahead and order immediately while it's still fresh in the head?Sheepdog said:The locking cap is a Stant G785, I got a nos replacement from eBay.com. Come up fairly often.

Great I will check the chassis number, I nearly would prefer the earlier style as the earlier model is a little more basic with no spoiler on the boot and other kind of more classic bits. I guess the later ones as the same as the 944 ones, well look the same anyhow.Sheepdog said:The later style wing mirror came in from chassis number 92481 02503, if yours is earlier then I suspect it should have the small plastic backed one. Those are hard to find as a lot of early cars only had one, the drivers side. Which in Europe and US is rhd passenger side. They occasionally come up on eBay.de, they are the same as the audi 50.

Just checked the chassis number. Date of 1st licencing August 1978 & 1978 manufacture with 924 in the reg and chassis number 9248106719. So does this look as if they are the original ones and if they are great as the car is completely original, yepee, rising in value so .....
An image here from a few years back when I was doubting the originality of the mirrors and the fuel cap.
