Wanted

The exhaust port has a ceramic coating. My advice now is to buy as good a head as you can and have it refurbished by someone who knows what they are doing. If you end up having to have further work done then the head will be done and ready to go, mitigating the cost. I will guess that the price quoted by EMC is a worst case, wont be more price, and if everything else is good (pistons, crank, rods, rebuilt head) then their repair/refurbishment will be a good deal cheaper.

Sorry I don't understand. U mean buy a good head and then do a whole rebuilt including cylinders?

No, I mean buy as good a head as you can (good and expensive aren't always the same thing) and don't scrimp and settle for a mediocre replacement. Then, get it rebuilt by EMC. Hopefully this will make the engine good, but if not and you find yourself needing to do more to then engine, then I think that the most cost effective plan would be to have the bottom end refurbished. The rods, crank and hopefully the pistons will all be good and a properly rebuilt head will not have been a wasted expense.

When I needed a new head I had JMG source me one, and then pressure test it to be sure. They then did the top end rebuild. All is now good (as you know Soli), running at 300 bhp. You could do worse than speak with them, even though they are not local to you.

+1 for that. Jon is always willing to give good advice and can source amd refurb a god head. Unless you have recent proof of it being done I would always have a refurb.

I'm sure Jon could arrange to pick it up on a flat bed. Or, if you have AA cover or similar, they could recover it to your choice of repairer (depending, of course, on what level of cover you've paid for). Either way, moving a dead car is not complicated.

Everyone raves about JMG and I'm sure they do top quality work at a good price. All I can say is that I've found them impossible to get ahold of. A couple of months ago I phoned, spoke to someone who didn't have the answer to my question, told me someone would get back to me and nobody did. This happened twice. I then tried email and the contact form on the website with no response at all. In the end I just took the business elsewhere. I guess they must be so busy that they're not interested in new customers.

Even us regular users of JMG would not describe them as slick or easy to communicate with. But like the A-Team, if you can find them, and if you need help...

Jon was desperately ill last year. Possibly the cause.
