Warning! Bad Black G50 Carrera

A WORD OF WARNING!

I drove from Yorkshire down to the Milton Keynes area first thing this morning to see a "Great condition" black '87 G50. I found out yesterday that it was a Cat D but, seeing as my TVR was a Cat D and gave me good service I thought that, if it was a good as he said, it was worth a look at the right price.

He seemed surprised when I told him it was on the register, as I was when he said he had never had it HPi'd

He still maintained that it was great, drove superbly, he'd even taken it to Le Mans!

What a complete waste of time. Overspray everywhere, hammerite on the front spoiler, the replacement (not OE) door seals where stuck on with Evo-stick, oh, and there were creases in the luggage compartment and about 2 tins worth of badly disguised filler. Add to that cheapo tyres and an MOT that conveniently ran out last week .... and you get the picture.

Stuart was amazed that I was as polite as I was to the guy

If anyone is thinking of going to see a similar car, email me off line and I'll let you know if it's the same one.

What's even worse, it's listed on a presumably reputable Porsche specialists website as a lovely original car!!!!

and the quest continues........

Bad luck [], some will tell you anything to get you to come and see their car only for it to be a complete nail. You ought to feel proud that you walked away, my guess is that some poor ignorant sod will end up paying a premium for it only to chuck a fortune at it when they realise what they have bought.

keep the faith - yours will turn up soon [;)]

Cheers Jacob.

The annoying thing is, I said to him, "look, if anything is wrong with it tell me honestly, because it's going to get a ground up checking" - I even said "So it is all in working order, lights, wipers, tax, docs, so if we do a deal I can drive it away?"

He laughed and said, "I think you'll be pleasantly surprised".

IT DIDN'T EVEN HAVE AN MOT FFS!!!!!!

Glad I'm not the only one... I have travelled thousands of miles to see all sorts of sh@t..... sellers must think we are all stupid.. you have brought a little happiness into my life tonight. sorry to sound up beat.. but to be honest... you and I are going to end up with a couple of belting examples..its just a matter of time..... .,.. my latest trip was cancelled on Friday as the SC I was due to see Glasgow was sold that day!!!! Good luck.. and with your superior budget, I hope I get there before you...

Does have a couple of slight marks on the anodised part of the Fuchs.
Slight rust bubble at the base of the windscreen, usual stone chips to bonnet (I had front bumper sprayed last year) but otherwise the body work is good.

This car has never been advertised, as I've been struggling with the thought of selling it.
But the next stage of my mid life crisis looms (done the motorbike, built a kit car, owned a Porsche) as does a loft conversion, so I'm facing up to this.

Offers over ÂŁ12k needed. Based in Telford.

Mail me if you are interested.

Andrew

I agree, it looks good but I really do want a Black Coupe if Poss.

Thanks for thinking about us though

Burriana - Just thought I would cheer you up - took mine out for a run on Friday and its running superb. The acceleration and noise these things kick out - just superb.
Its now back in its garage - coated in anti-corrosion spray. Time I got home on Friday, it was too late to wash it so gave it a good coating of spray. If its good enough for the motorbike then the car gets it also!!!
Keep searching - the right car will show, eventually.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Just remember Targas make the same noise only you get to hear more of it....even better in the summer and give just as much fun.

Hi Richard,
I don't know if you have ever driven a targa, but to be perfectly honest the scuttle shake isn't bad at all. In fact porsche were not silly when they designed the targa.
Popular misconception suggests that scuttle shake is a problem, this is is simply not the case, Porsche designed this car to be as rigid as the coupe, and if you read the reports of some of the people that campaiged these cars in various competitions over the years you will indeed find this to be the case.

Indeed why on earth did RUF use the 3.2 Targa as its basis for the CRC as apposed to the coupe?

Now RUF decided to use the Targa Body shell BECAUSE it did not flex, like the convertible, in fact the body behaviour is similar to the the coupe. (as bourn out by quite a few racers)
So
RUF decided to use 3.2 Carrera Targa's as donors to create the ultra rare RUF CRC's. (Which I'm sure you've heard of!
The RUF cars are fitted with a 3.4 modified engine that produces a minimum of 280 BHP. These cars are fitted with a special RUF R50 6 speed gearbox
Not to mention various body stengenthing plates etc.
In all an absolutely awsome car! (As is the standard Targa you unbeleivers!!!)

Ive had mine 11 years and the roof has'nt leaked yet!

Mind you I like to drive it with the roof off- mainly for the sound track.- you can't do that with a coupe!!!

Sorry got carried away, several glasses of a quality Red were administered whilst I was composing this (supposedly) short message.
well........ gooooodnigh...t g..u..y..s......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

If the design allowed for colour coding the roofs so that the lines were nearly indistinguishable from the coupe, similar to the Ferrari 308/28/48/55 then I might be interested.

But they still suffer from wind noise at speed though, some, granted, a lot less than others, but still noisey, which detracts from hearing the proper noise that you actually want to hear [:)]

You're right of course but the cab shell is essentially the same as the targa (except the cab is 30lbs lighter). And without the rear glass you get more of the sounds and smells.

The notion of cabriolet scuttle shake is well-founded elsewhere (Astra cab the worst I have ever experienced) but not on impact-bumper 911's IMO. The roofless cars don't behave any differently to their all-enclosed siblings. Any of the mags who track tested targas and cabs back in the day, and compared the data to their coupe information, all said there was no difference in the times. Road and Track got slightly better results in their skidpan and slalom tests out of an SC Cab than the Coupe, but said the differences were so slight that it that could have been down to grit on the road surface.

I think in the end it comes down to what you like the look of - I'm not a Targa man but good luck to anyone who is.

I have obtained a f/g roof panel from the states which will be colour coded to the car. I will leave the targa bar black for originality but I have seen some pics from the states where the hoop is painted a la the body as well and this looks awsome.
The benefit of being able to take the roof off in summer (and the rest of the time when possible) far outweighs the slight wind noise, and leaks and rattle are virtually non existent if you look after the seals (vaseline).
The lines of the coupe are beautiful I agree and if money and space permitted I would also have a coupe, preferably a 3.2CS, but I would have to keep the targa.

Hi
Interesting seeing your exploits on finding a 3.2. I went through the same last year - with confirmation from sellers over the 'phone that it was a cherished car; pity about the severe battery leak you find that must have been going on for more than a couple of months judging by the corrosion! Thank you but not for me.

I ended up buying a black '88 3.2 targa from up Norwich way and have appreciated the versatility of it [even the wife appreciates that we can get the whole family in!!]. All the benefits of open air motoring with the added safety of the roll over bar and a reduction in wind turbulence from the fitted rear screen. Magic.

All the best.
