warning lights

Hi there, car is a 964 carrera 2 tip
1) Can someone please advise, light for belts has been coming on, when checked all seems okay, belts going round, fan working. Then it suddenly goes off and then reappears again after a few mlies.

2) There is a warning light directly below the seatbelt light in the light pod, it appears to be something going into a box, I can't find it in my drivers manual, what is it, this too has suddenly come on then off

and finally would any of this affect the cars performance, it has suddenly started to cut out, re start go a mile or so and cut out again. Have recently replaced DME

Any assistance/ advise would be extremely welcome

Many thanks
Craig

Craig,

There are a few possibilities.

1 - The belt sensor has a reputation for breaking up. It consists of the wheel which bears against the belt which is mounted on a small lever which operates a microswitch. I have seen reports of the bearing in the wheel breaking up which causes the wheel to move on it's axle which causes the microswitch to release when it shouldn't - which causes the light to come on.

2 - The warning light (no.8) is the Tiptronic warning light. The full list is as follows:

1 - Spoiler
2 - Cabrio roof
3 - Airbag
4 - Not used
5 - Fan belt
6 - Side Marker lights
7 - Trailer turn signal (!!!)
8 - Tiptronic Gearbox
9 - Seat Belt
10 - Catalyser
11 - Battery
12 - Lights

One other problem which can affect of of these is the connections on the back of the clock. They seem to develop a high resistance over time and benefit hugely from a resoldering. Unlikely to affect performance although can affect battery charging and spoiler operation.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave,
many thanks for your in depth knowledge and help. May I ask where aboute do you fill / check the gearbox ( tiptronic) as I have no manual and in the drivers book its not referred too. If the level was getting low would it effect the performance, ie does asensor pick up on that and start to shut things down so as not to damage the gearbox. I have had it that the light has come on, after the car had been parked for over a week, then when stopped, left to cool and restarted the light stayed off.
Also if the battery runs a bit loaw would this again effect the cars running ie the car detects this and starts to shut down.
As you have gathered Dave I don't know that much about them.
Any assistance given will be gratefully received

Many thanks

Craig

Craig,

I have to admit that I'm not in the Tip gearbox ain any way so I'd hesitate to offer an opinion. The dash mounted (clock) warning light for the Tip gearbox has got to be software generated but whether it monitors fluid level is beyond me I'm afraid.

It might be worth posting a question on the Yahoo Group (http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/porsche964/) since I know there are many Tip users there.

Dave

Hi Dave
many thanks for your help
I am booking the car in for a service so will ask them to check all levels / chenge the gearbox oil while they are at it.

The heater hose that runs at the side of the drvers footwell seems to be holed and is kicking out all the heat into the car, in winter i suppose its okay but not in this weather.
How big a job is it to change and is it a manufacturers part or is it a bought lenght of hose cut down.
By the way how are the car mods going, your car still looks wicked from the pictures listed.
Once again Dave many thanks

Craig
