Warranties on a 5 year old 996 ?

Hi

I am looking at warranties for my 5 year old 996. Porsche does one for £995 (plus a check is needed costing £150)
Many places cover Boxsters but not 911's (Warranty Direct for example)

Anyone know a good place to get a 996 warranty ?

J

Julian, unfortunately I think the OPC is still your best bet, these after market warranties are a minefield, with what is & isn't covered & by whom !!
The real issue is whether you keep the £1145 as a "buffer" for repairs (that you may or may not need) or spend it on a warranty for peace of mind if something big goes !! Best of luck with that one.
Regards
Grant

Keep the £1000as a buffer is good advice. Warranty companies make money by keeping it in their purse not paying out for all things. Make sure you are buying a good car to start with and look after it well. The porsche warranty is good but might not cover the typical stuff that fails. The bits that do or might fail may be possibly sorted for a disounted price by a good independant. Adrian Crawford. performance2and4.co.uk.

What is the expert opinion on warranties in general? Is there any legal recourse against Porsche or the dealer who sold the car if something big goes which is clearly component failure rather than wera and tear?

I know it's not quite the same thing, but when my fridge/freezer broke down at 15 months old (out of warranty) I took it back to the shop and they gave me a new one, accepting my argument that a £900 fridge should last longer than 15 months.

I only had a warranty once, beyond what the dealer may have provided, on a used porsche, a 993C2 tip, was used once to replace oil level 'sender'. Never bothered with warranties since, now got a 6 year old 996. As I recall, normal wear and tear not covered, which means a lot of moving parts not covered. If you are a genius you can move the car on before it goes wobbly, 996s not old enough yet to predict when this might be IMHO.

Thanks for your input. I was beginning to think I was the only person on the planet with no warranty.

To perhaps kick start the data on 996s, my wife has a 1998 996 C2 Cab. Serviced regularly and driven sensibly, almost daily, 25,000 miles. At the weekend the head gasket blew. The OPC has just removed the engine to get at the head gasket and found one of the crank cases is cracked. Whole new engine required. Hence my original question about warranties versus expectations of product life.

How much will a new engine cost?

I ran a C2 (March 1999) for 4 years (40K miles) the only major problem I had was a crank case gasget failure after 36k. £900 to repair.

AFN Chiswick are quoting £9,000 inc labour, or £8,000 to just replace the cracked crank case. Julian, I am not much of a mechanic - is a cracked crank case different to the problem you had, and even if it is, why is there such a difference between your cost and mine?

Higgy

My advice is to go to an independant Porsche specialist.

Some years ago I had a 964 which I bought 6 months old from AFN. It was regularly serviced with them and when it was about 6 years old and out of warranty it developed a misfire. AFN first diagnosed a faulty distributor which was changed. My mistake was not to ask for the old one back . The new distributor made no difference and they had the car in and diagnosed a gasket problem requiring the engine to be removed etc etc at a cost of about £4000. Having contacted the Porcshe Club tech dept I took the car to Autofarm who diagnosed a faulty lambda sensor - the total cost was about £300. The car was transformed and behave impeccably up to the time I sold it with about 30000 on the clock when I bought my first new Porshe a 996.

I wrote to Porsche GB about this incident a got a stupid reply . My advice is if you have no warranty to go to an independant - I certainly saved a shed load. Now I have had new cars for a while for obvious reasons I have kept with main dealers.

Good luck

Although I haven't had any need yet to use my warranty but I purchased one from PARAGON and they have given me 'Superb' service so far and very helpful compared to some of the main dealers I've spoken to - Speak to Russell there !

Cheers

Rapid.

Jonathan, many thanks for this advice.

Looking back up the page I think I have unfairly hi-jacked this topic (quite innocently - I did start talking about warranties) so I am going to put a line under this discussion and start a new thread.

Regards to all.
