Warranty Dilemna again

My cars OPC warranty runs out in December and i am again not sure what to do with regard to renewing it.
I do very few miles (less than 4k per year) and so am loath to fork out for an OPC warranty at 1300 quid.
Warranty wise are again insuring porsche 911s at a cost of around 900 quid without wear and tear and 1000 including wear and tear.
Should i shell out for peace of mind or save the money to use against a repair?
I had a few problems when i bought the car but since then it has been fine (is that tempting fate?) A recent health check showed no problems at all
Using an indy maybe the cost of the warranty would go a long way towards the repair costs. What are your thoughts please?

I would not bother with the warrenty, and put the money to oneside for any repairs, there are plenty of threads on OPC's not honuoring warrenty because of incorrect battery, or modifications.

Obviously if you have a major problem, you will wish you had the warrenty.

Had my car for 2 years and no real problems, there was a very small oil leak that was done under warrenty ( involved engine out) but if it had not been covered i would have left it.

so it's heads or tails, and then best of 3 if not the answer you want

OK I've got a 997 but I think the same thinking applies....

You either pay out £1k on a warranty and hope that anything that goes wrong is covered (not always the case of course). Or you put that £1k in a safe place and leave it to pay for any non-service or upgrade work.

What, of course, you are really doing with a warranty is buying an insurance scheme that pays out if something serious goes wrong. So like all insurance, you only really need it if you can't afford a huge payout. For example a third party claim of £1m on your travel insurance - not many of us could privately fund that sort of exposure. But on a car part failure, I can't imagine a cost much in excess of £5k in the worst scenario (a replacement engine) so the scale of your exposure is relatively low.

I certainly did a check of the forums (fora?) for known faults and warranty claims/issues and, on balance, reckon that I'll save money. After all, 3 years = £3k. And I'll save time because the answer will be -- got a fault, get it fixed and no wrangling with either the garage or the insurers to get stuff done. I'll be in control of what gets done, when and by whom.

No warranty for me.[:)]

I agree with the above 2 posts. I bought the OPC warranty when I first bought my car @ 3 yrs old & wasn't sure I actually understood what could go wrong & how much it cost - so thought I needed a potential "safety net".
The first years warranty actually was a break-even investment because 4 ignition coils & 2 air con radiators were replaced in the first month, together with fixing 2 water leaks (Not sure how all of this managed to escape the 111 point check!).
However the air con radiators only needed replacing because of a lack of adequate maintenance by the previous owner (easily remedied by any reasonable owner) & the ignition coils can be replaced relatively cheaply by an inde.

Result was that I haven't renewed since & haven't had any problems in the 3 yrs since apart from an alternator replacement - which didn't break the bank @ £350 total cost (Daily driver, approx 8,000 miles / year).

As above with the earlier posts when i got the 996 c2 and was new to porsche's and a bit scared ( engine bang it's a porsche etc )i had the warranty with the car
i renewed as a matter of course 3 years sub's nothing happened I am fastidious about maintaining my cars and found things werent covered so felt short changed plus the exclusions on the warranty and some of the "stories" about claims being rejected on the basis of unrelated non porsche parts -batteries etc I decided to risk it without and always in the knowledge I might have to cough up for the big one.It never happened .I then got rid of the car and bought a turbo again the same rational thought processes occurred and i decided not to,I think porsche's bloody mindedness on the warranty at the time helped -they put the prices up quite a bit- rather like giving the owners the bird for having the cheek to invest in their motor cars. However i did try and buy wisely,I do over service the car( change oil )and it is a GT1 block. There are plenty of warranties out there Hartech and i think JZM and maybe even RSJ in slough , and some people have been very pleased with warranty wise and other non specialist providers. There are always long threads on Pistonheads about this,Soovy who is a barrister has looked at the Porshe warranty contract and basically in black and white any non porsche parts even a tracker strictly speaking exclude you, a lot of poeple disaggree with him, however the thrust of all of this is it is down to the discretion of the OPC,not something i would want to chance, because of this " obstrutive"attitiude i choose to go my own way but may look at an alternative unless Porsche have a change of heart at some stage in the future and decide they want to get all the business.Oh I also use an excellant indie

thank you for the comments, I think I may be tempted to 'go it alone' over the next year.

My husband has a subaru with warranty wise cover and he has had quite a few claims which has made the warranty worth it but his car is used as a workhorse and has over 70000 miles on it at 5 years old. It also costs a lot less than the one for the porsche would be!!

so i think its a case of bank the money and keep my fingers crossed!

over 3 yrs i saved nearly£3k but i only didnt do the warranty because i was doing 3-4 k miles a yr-altho i am nor sure if that really is logical!!!

anyway all was well and of course with my current 993 warranty isnt an issue and i just make sure i get it well lloked after at JZM and hopefully any major costs will have reared up by now??!!
