Warranty recommendations?

Hello - took ownership of my 987 Boxster S back in April - it's an '05MY with 33k miles.
I'm thinking about taking out a Warranty in the new year, to help mitigate against any major/expensive issues over the next couple of years.
Car is running well and was inspected by Peter Morgan prior to purchase, but understand subsequently that there are known weaknesses that can impact this generation of Porsche, which I'd like to protect against.

Does anyone have any recommendations, or companies to avoid, in this area?
Have heard on forums that Warrantywise have a reasonable rep, plus the OPC warranty albeit expensive and likely more restrictive (non Porsche wiper blades being an issue I hear...!).

Has anyone actually had to make a claim for a major issue with Warrantywise etc? What was your experience?

Appreciate your thoughts - thanks,

James Gray

When the original manufacturer warranty on my 986S ran out, I took out the extended Porsche warranty for a couple of years but then switched to a Tesco warranty when Porsche hiked up the extended warranty prices.

Tesco then pulled the plug on that product, (I think they realised they were losing money on it), so I switched to WarrantyWise - which if you take out a two year warranty, is actually quite reasonably priced.

However, during my ownserhip of that vehicle I did make a few warranty claims and whilst they were all dealt with, the ones that happened during the time I was covered by Porsche's own warranty were dealt with much quicker and more efficiently. The OPC also only fitted genuine Porsche parts whilst on the Porsche warrany.

When the aircon condensors behind the front bumper needed replacing, Warrantywise would only cover the cost of third part replacement parts and it took ages as they sourced them and supplied them to the garage.

My advice is, if you can afford it, the genuine Porsche extended warranty gives a better service. If you're looking to save money, WarrantyWise are fine but claims take longer to resolve and you may not get genuine Porsche parts.

In my opinion, it's a classic example of "you get what you pay for".

i took out opc warranty last year after 3 months of my 07 boxster s purchase.the cost was not too great if i rememebr about£1350 but included 2 yrs roadside porsche assistance for europe and GB.

last month the lambda sensors went and wouldve cost£850 according to paperwork -i felt no different from if i had paid the bill myself-in other words if you can, stick with OPC warranty for peace and ease of mind.just my experience

I suppose you should get the warranty you feel most comfortable with, for me the OPC warranty gives good piece of mind but the gloss of the advert and literature is simply that - gloss - and fails to provide the bumper to bumper cover you think you are paying for.
There are so many restrictions and items labled as service parts that you end up paying in addition when you have work done.
OPC prices are also considerably higher for service parts, they also insist on genuine Porsche parts at their inflated prices - for example - Porsche battery - £300 ish yet a bosch battery that is a better battery is around £100 - but if you fit it you invalidate the warranty, Wipers - Porsche use Bosch as original equipment but if you fit Bosch and not Porsche you invalidate the warranty.

For all parts or service items not covered by Porsche warranty they still insist you use Porsche parts or bang goes the warranty.

If you dont intend to do anything to the car yourself and are happy to have the expensive Porsche parts then go for OPC, of course if you have a brand new car with the 2 year warranty then some service parts that are not covered by the warranty (wheel bearings for instance) does put you in a good position to argue that any failure of that part was a design or manufactured fault - this includes items like door locks and battery and the sale of goods act is your friend.

Warrantywise have a good reputation, they are not cheap but more items are covered in their policy and for a car a few years old it is perhaps the wisest choice.

Go get the policy booklet and see if you are happy with it

Hartec already run a warranty/service plan and Revolution are looking into doing the same. Why waste money on a third-party warranty which when it comes to the crunch might not pay out?

Thanks all for taking the time to post - time to read through the small print of both policies I guess before I bite the bullet....
I work 3 mins from PC Reading so the Porsche option would be convenient, wonder if they'll waive the initial inspection fee if possible, having had Peter Morgan do a full report a few months ago.

The 111 point check is mandatory and has to be done by an OPC as data will be logged and verified on the Porsche system. The warranty is underwritten by a German insurer and I presume the OPC gets only a small commission which is why they charge for the warranty check. If you already have AA or RAC family cover for other cars in the household you probably don't h
need the breakdown cover which can be deleted taking about £150 off the warranty cost. Peter Morgan's or anyone else's thumbs up won't count for diddly squat.
