Warranty / Servicing dilemma

The car was due a 6 year service at the end of March, just 4 months after I bought the car, but they refused to include it in the purchase price. This cost over £1100 when it was done & had to be done by on OPC to satisfy the warranty. It would have course been much better if the warranty was aligned with the service, date wise.

See attached for info. regarding warranty conditions and servicing / repairs

More serious is that the (PDK) gearbox has become a bit snatchy. I suspect that when its in, they will want to change the gearbox fluid which I understand would be done at the 8 year service, due next March. I am thinking about getting them to do it anyway to see if it cures the problem.

How do you drive the car, are you overly sympathetic with it ?

I would not offer any solutions to the problem, just get them to diagnose - fix under the warranty

I'm sure that this must have been discussed before, but here goes.

I bought my 2016 981 Boxster S from our local OPC in November 2021. The car is low mileage & of course came with an official Porsche warranty for 24 months. I am very pleased with the car, but I was disappointed with the OPC. The warranty has about 3.5 months remaining & there are a couple of things that I want checking out before it expires. It has developed a very loud thrashing/ blowing sound on startup, which disappears after a minute or so. I believe that it is the secondary air pump & will be covered by the warranty.

I cannot decide whether to stick with the Porsche warranty, & stay in the OPC network for servicing or bail out & go to Zentrum. I have visited Zentrum & like their setup. Its not really a cost issue, I just don't like the way that the OPC try to upsell when you are booking in. Also they rang me while the car was in, did I want the drain holes cleaned out for £175 plus VAT while it was there ? You can imagine my reply.

Cheers, Paul

FYI my 2015 Boxster S service book indicates both PDK oil changes as 120000 miles or 12 years. The OPC did not change any PDK oil this year at the 8 year service.

Thank you both for your replies.

Andrew, I don't thrash the car, but it gets driven spiritedly. I rev it out in Sport mode regularly. Of course, I don't know how the car was driven previously. It only covered about 1800 miles per year.

I looked at the service / warranty conditions before I bought the car, but as the car was outside the 3 month window for them to service it, they would not agree to it.

I would not suggest to them any remedy, it it was suggested then I would agree to it. Another OPC suggested an early fluid change to a friend with a low mileage Cayman.

Alistair. Yes my service book says the same, & I'm sure that Porsche will know best, but it seems a long time to leave it.

Thank you Paul ...

With Sport Plus the PDK gives you ~ nine driving modes, try cycling through them all to see if it improves

The PDK fluid in the gearbox should have been changed at the six year service. Then again at twelve, along with the mechanical gear oil

Most people do no realise there are two separate fluid parts to the gear box

The oil in my 981 PDK wasn't chnaged at 6 years. If you have any concerns about the gearbox it's certainly worth keeping the warranty. If it goes wrong they don't repair them, just replace at great expence.

Ditto ^ ... my 2013 981 Cayman S was serviced in 2019 - the PDK transmission oil & clutch fluid was not changed

My recollection is that 987 PDK had oil change at 6 years but that was extended to 12 on 981. I remember having a discussion about it with the service manager at the 6 year service for my previous 981, who checked his assumption of 6 and confirmed it was 12.

AndrewCS - thanks so much for the booklet. My 2013 981 Service Booklet had the schedule in it. My 2016 981 just has a generic tick list and doesn't indicate the schedule. Really helpful to have a simple reminder of the schedule. Nothing said about drain holes of course, as has already been discussed elsewhere!

Welcome Brian ...

Water drains - my six year service report paperwork (five pages) for the GT4 has a Long Life Guarantee Condition Report page, this has an eighteen point check list which includes a line item for - Check that water drains are not blocked

This page also provides reference to the Long Life Guarantee section of the vehicle`s Guarantee and Maintenance Booklet

The service invoice includes a line item for Additional work for water drains checked @ £33.00 - this charge was included in the overall price of the service and was not an additional charge to the original quote

Hi Paul. Good advice in this thread. I just want to stress that, re the PDK, make sure you get it fixed to your satisfaction under warranty and put some miles on it to check. (Ignore how they do it, changing the oil, resynchronising etc. That is not important. It is your driving experience that matters)

The 987 version of the PDK can be a little clunky, especially coming up to junctions or roundabouts. So you may also get the 'they all do that sir' response at some point. The trouble is that they rarely show a warning light which is another reason for not doing much.

From experience, if you think there might be a problem, extend the warranty.
