Hi
Well after 2 weeks ownership I have received a letter from OPC Nottingham informing that there was recall for 'Engine Bay Paintwork', work to be carried out free of charge.

Should I bother ?, I would have thought that during the 7 yrs life of the car it would have been done.

Anybody know what this work entails before I phone them up ?

Thanks

Mark

Not sure but coincidentally, a friend popped round yesterday said that his brother-in-law had a problem with his Porsche and thought maybe I could help.
He said it was a 911. When I got to it ( a few miles away) it was a 1998 996 C2 (strange colour like dark metalic maoon). Anyway, the problem was
it would not start. After messing about for a while we got it going (blown fuse). When he started it I heard a strange squeaking coming from the
engine. I popped the rear engine bay hood and to my horror all the bottom underside of his engine lid where it meets the bumber was rusted to hell.
I mean you could poke a screwdriver through it! I have never seen this on a 996 before. Maybe this is/was what it's all about.

I never did figure out the engine squeak.

There was a rust issue on the engine lid on some of the eary 996s. We has this in the US as well. Loren may have the info. I did not pay much attention because I am a Boxster owner. Jeff

Loren sent me the info. W103 is the number for the service action/recall for "rear engine deck lid corrosion." Also known as rust.

There are 3 scopes of repairs depending on what is found from a visual inspection. (1) No rust, (2) minor, and (3) serious. With 3 you get a new engine lid.

I got a recall notice on this item 3 years ago. Perhaps the change of ownership registration at Porsche triggered the reminder?
