Was it worth the weight?

I've just replaced my beautiful 18"cup split rims for a set of those 17" magnesium cup thingies complete with pilot cup sport stickies.( YUCK)

Question:

How much weight do you guys think I have saved?

Note: I have only changed for the impending track day and no matter what you lot say...The splities are going back on after.

This leads me nicely on to my second question.

All this fannying around changing wheels on said sausage is driving me mad mainly because I cant get my trolly jack under the car. Have any of you chaps identified a suitable trolly jack that fits under.

I thank you

lee

Have you tried driving up on to a plank to give extra clearance? (I know it's not ideal - but as a work-around it helps)

I'm sure Demon Tweeks etc have some low clearance jacks.

Talk about physician heal thyself...........Mr Fulford proprietor of 1000 garages and unlimited access to hoists asking this question.........what next Richard Branston asking do we know of any good airlines to the States.......[]

Oh and you will have better road/track holding with the 18" rims as per the later Cup Cars and 3.8RSR why did you change to the 17"?

Magnesium wheels have a 1.74kg/dm3 weight thus saves 10.6kg of weight per set

Sorry Lee only joking above the car in Lightweight spec is best suited to the 17" magnesiums....sorry if I have upset you .........

Desmond dear fellow, you could never upset me...

Infact your not far wrong but I made it less that 8kg across all four...I reckon those cup stickies must be heavier tyres than the 18" Dunlops.

8kg...how many bags of sugar or tins of baked beens is that?

Hardly worth all the fuss was it?...and car that looks like someone's stolen the wheels and put four space savers on it.

Anyway openning up a workshop on a Sunday is grief..I need to be able to change the wheels at home so that the wife cant complain that I've left her and the dustbin lids on my only day off!

I've done the driving up on blocks of wood thing but would really prefer a jack so that I can change them in the Garage if needs be. (Rain and all that)

Lee,

Wood works in garages too[;)]

There is this one - bit expensive (all right - a lot expensive!) but it is lightweight[:D]

S'only got a 1000kg lifting limit... who's got an RS that light??? [;)]

Sorry lee but I think you will find the 18" wheel set is lighter due to the reduced rubber. Don't have anything to prove this. But have heard it said (so anyone know for definate?)

Laurence

My point exactly.

The same rolling radius gives a higher tyre side wall e.g more rubber thus more weight.

Lee believe it or not the jack you want is from Halfords and only costs about £40. It has never failed to get under any of the rear jacking points on any of the cars I've inspected. It even went under Paul Scutt's RS Clubsport and I don't think anyone will be running a car lower than that. I forget the fully lowered saddle height, but I'll check later today so you know which one to buy.

Have you stood on the bathroom scales yet with each wheel in turn to check their weight. You could clean them in the bath while you're there and really wind the wife up.

RSR

Yes sir, done all of that and now the backs of the wheels look as good as the fronts..Only trouble is all that black brake dust is a bugger to get out of between my toes n' bits....

The model of jack would be useful as I was only in Halfords the other day looking and wondering if they would work..

Thanks

lee

I see --->this thread<--- has just been posted - looks like it has the info you are looking for?!

(By the way, I have a halfords jack which only _just_ fits under the Boxster jacking points with sports suspension - I assumed the RS would be lower (sorry, I would have suggested it earlier)
