Washer fuse !

Hi, a few months ago I had a problem with my windscreen wipers / washer switch. So removed it and cleaned it up. All worked well until the other day. So instead of taking the switch apart again I thought I would bite the bullet and fit a new switch. (Purchased from Bert Gear £79.00 +vat +pp(excellent service as usual)).

All went together fairly easily, BUT whenever I operate the washers / wipers it blows the fuse!

Is this a faulty switch? How can I test it?

What else can it be?

Your help would be most appreciated as I have my first track day booked for next Friday and obviously need to get this sorted ASAP.

Cheers
Paul.

Could be the switch but more likely is that the live feed is running to ground somewhere. To eliminate the switch remove it and touch the terminals together (live not lve and ground, assuming it's grounded) and if the fuse then blows again you know it's not the switch. You could put a meter over the terminal and test for the correct resistance (zero or low would be correct but I can't give you a figure)

Thanks Bones, had a play last night and it still blows the fuse. Re fitted my old faulty switch (intermittent fault) and this does not blow the fuse. So presume the new switch is faulty.

Hate that when you buy new stuff and it's toast straight out of the packet and much worse when you've wired it in to some completely inaccessible area!

I don't think the problem is the switch. The switch only distributes power to various destinations and has no route to ground. I suspect that you have disturbed the wiring harness when fitting and re-ritting the switches. You should physically inspect the wiring from the wiper switch connector to their destinations or at least as far as you can. Look for nicks or chaffing in the insulation, which might provide a path to ground e.g. steering column. For information the connector pins are as follow.
1. Live feed in
2. Wiper motor fast speed
3. Washer pump
4. Wiper motor single wipe
5. Wiper motor slow speed
6. Pulse transmitter
I hope this is helpful
