Wastegate Dilema

Hi all,

My 88 944 Turbo has developed a small irritating exhaust leak. Investiagtion showed it to be a crack on one of the fins on the wastegate. Whilst it isn't affeting performance it is like I said a little annoying and I am sure will get picked up on my MOT in Sept. Therefore I have a few questions:

Does anyone know if this sort of crack can be repaired?

If not what is the going rate for a new wastegate?

There is also the question of whether to upgrade or not to a dual port wastegate? Do I really need more horsepower? I know stupid question!!!

I'd recommend the Tial - around £300 inc adapters from the US. If you have a 220 turbo, it won't hold much more than 11psi high up the rev range

I have a good used wastegate if you're interested - rebuilt in 2002 and holding 11psi. That plus a boost enhancer (which I also have [;)]) + chips works pretty well

The stock wastegate body cannot be repaired. I know because when I upgraded to a Lindsay Racing DPW I realised my WG body was cracked. Unfortunately this cost me $300 because that is the exchange price on the original wastegate, therefore I did investigate possibility of repair at the time but couldn't find anyone who could do it. I did consider brazing the crack myself but LR wouldn't have accepted the body back and I doubt the repair would have lasted.

No point going for OEM - they are hugely expensive, so unless you want to stay stock for some strange reason then this is a silly route.

As Ed suggested Tial seems to be the best aftermarket option. Relatively cheap and can be used in either single port mode (so easy installation) or DPW if you want to go that way (highly recommended).
