Wastegate Problem Perhaps..?

Hi Guys
I need a wee bit of advice.. I think my wastegate isnt sealing right. I'll try to describe the problem. When its on boost sometimes I can hear what sounds like a chuffing noise. I have worked on relief valves before and it sounds like the valve isnt seating right, as if the spring is weak. Sometimes i get no boost at all. Other times it goes great no problem.

There are second hand wastegates out there but I might end up with the same scenario.
Is it worth my while taking it out over the winter and doing it up..? Is this even possible...? Is there an aftermarket upgraded wastegate available which will fit in the originals place and look similar ..?

This is not the start of the slippery slope BTW ... I just want the wee car to function as it was originally designed...!

Any suggestions...? Thanks Chaps..!

The wastegate is a weak point on the car and many didnt seal even when the cars were relatively new. I wouldnt buy a used replacement OEM part as it may be as bad as yours, and if not: it will be sooner or later. Aftermarket replacement parts are available, but I cant remember from whom now.

I bought three Tial 38mm with adapters from europartsetc and have always been pleased with their faultless service and quick delivery. The adapters provided are stainless.

Lindsey do a single port (for clubman racing in the States) and a dual port.

Supposed to be bolt in.
Anyone any comments on them?
Nick had some Lindsey upgrades on his car, does anyone know
if he used one of their wastegates too?

I think my wastegate is acting up too, cuts the ignition higher up
the range every now and again.....

That's where I'm planning to get mine from - currently 250 ish against 500 here!
Out of interest how bulky and heavy are they? I'm planning to get my Aunt to bring it as handluggage at xmas if that's practical.

Thanks for the info lads - I am going to go with the single port possibly Tial or Lyndsey as its more in keeping with the original design.

From memory they are fairly heavy for their size - it will cause a few raised eyebrows at the airport security check. If your aunt dosent mind the hassle go for it...!

A better wastegate than the standard flawed one (fully functioning or not) will certainly benefit both the delivery of and indeed the amount of power (not that I would encourage such a thing of course [;)]).

Don't get the LR wastegate. The TIAL is a better unit and cheaper and can work in either single or dual port mode (so is ready for future upgrades). I've got a LR DPW and I regret it. I didn't get the core charge back due to a cracked housing. I can't really complain about the function of the refurbished LR unit, as far as I can tell it has functioned 100% perfectly, but it cost me as I didn't get my core charge back. The TIAL unit looks like a nice bit of kit. My only concern with it would be that it doesn't have a support bracket like the original wastegate so the weight of the unit rests entirely on the exhaust, which I don't like, but from the many users out there it doesn't seem to cause any adverse problems. There are some reports of the 38mm units siezing, but they seem to be few and far between so on balance they seem to be the best of the aftermarket units out there - certainly the most common.

There is really nowt wrong with the original wastegate - the only issue with them is that they've been on the cars for 20yrs now ad these things clearly don't last forever, and the problem with buying a new OEM one is that they are very expensive. However if you were to by a brand new OEM one i'm sure it would work perfectly fine and as originally intended for many years.

I thought I read somewhere (so it must be true ! [;)]) that even brand new the original wastegate was flawed as it had a weak spring or some such thus meaning it opens rather sooner than it should ? Hence conspiracy theories of the 944 turbo (in this instance) being nobbled so it didn't embarrass the rather elderly rear engined design of the day more than it did already...

They werent brilliant from new, thats true. There wasa firm who rebuiltand modified them, but I cant still remember who.

The wastegate and adapters form a relatively compact unit but it's not light. I wouldn't want to carry one as handluggage onboard.
