Watching the 997 in production

Visited the factory yesterday for a tour of 911 production facilities.

We were in a group of 10 and the tour (which is free) lasted for about 1hr and 40 minutes.

There are four separate buildings for production for the body (welding and stuff!), painting, engine manufacture and assembly. The tour covers the latter two.

I was amazed at how small and apparently simple the productions line is for the engine manufacture and how each engine is built by one guy from start to finish and takes about 2 and a half hours.

The main car assembly line is also in one relatively small building and is spread over three floors. Its interesting to see the mix of lhd, rhd, coupe, cab, 2wd, 4wd, turbo all going down the same production line, and how they mix relatively simple principles with high tech robots to create a very flexible production facility.

Saw loads of 997 turbos parked and undisguised, they look very tempting in the flesh.

All in all a fascinating experience and one to be recommended. I can only imagine that the tour with PCGB with a few added priveliges would enhance the experience even more.
