Water/ coolant level ..

Hi all, had my Boxster S 987 2006 since 2008 with no problems at all , now has 48000 trouble free miles but last few weeks the coolant level has been fluctuating to the point I now need to put about 2 cup full,s in some days but nothing other days with same mileage ? Strange, trusted garage put car on ramp but found no signs of leakage, think I read somewhere about the cap on rear reservoir in rear boot leaking and I have seen a vapour / damp around the filling area and on underside of rear boot lid, could it be this? Any thoughts appreciated...

Ian,

If there's no external leak of coolant I'd certainly start with replacing the cap before looking elsewhere, particularly since there appears to be evidence of a leak in that area. A cheap and simple fix - if it works.

Other than that I'd get the system pressure tested just to ensure that there defiitely isn't a leaking radiator, etc.

I agree with Jeff - I noticed a lot of condensation around the rear bootlid above the coolant cap and around the cap oil filler area. New cap (04 variant) and the problem was cured - you can get original caps off eBay for around £20

Yep & I think they are slightly cheaper from OPC, in region of £16 when I last bought one.

Amazes me the price that some people get away with charging on eBay, wind deflector clips for 986 is a classic, they're about 4x as expensive on eBay than at the OPC!
