Water in my whale tail

My rubber tail spoiler is accumulating water on one side, which stays there until I can open the engine lid to let it drain. It takes well over 24hrs to drain fully, so I'm guessing the water's been absorbed into the rubber somehow.

Has anyone else come across this / know of a tidy fix?

It's a factory turbo tail fitted to an 81 SC

Hi John,

Here it is:

OK - at least it's the only style that I could think of that might have accumulated water!
You said that you thought water was being absorbed into the rubber, which with the correct Porsche lip should be a definite no no - water generally just sits on it and runs off when you are on the move. If it is soaking up water that suggests that it is perished beyond recovery.
Is it in fact collecting in the area where the tea tray section joins to the engine lid? I'm not sure what usually stops this happening, but it's never been an issue with any of my 930s or my little Ruf 911SCR.

I just took a more detailed picture. Initially the water was seeping out between the rubber and the body of the spoiler (A). After leaving it overnight, a smaller amount started coming out under the black seal between the spoiler and the engine lid (B)

On closer inspection I can see the (A) gap is about 5mm, but on the other, non-leaking side, it's about 2mm - obviously something to do with the problem

(What made me think the rubber was acting like a sponge was the amont of time it took to get all the water out. Total quantity we're talking out here would be less than a cup full, I guess)

Thanks Nathan. Sounds right to me. I'll try taking it off and re-mounting it first, could just be that that something needs tightening. Somehow I doubt it, but I'll have to take the old one off to fit a new one anyway, so worth a try!
