Water in The Fuel Tank

The kiddies put at least a litre of water in the fuel tank instead of the screenwash. Guess I shouldn't have made that cup of tea while they were doing it. "Daddy it wouldn't go in the little one so we put it in the big one....! AAAAAAGH!"

So advice needed. I am tempted to just try and run it out of the car. It is 1 litre or so of water and 3/4 tank of fuel. But... I have visions of water in the oil, white goo, overheating, damaged bearings etc etc.

Has anyone drained a tank? I didn't get any results on the forum search. Considering where the car is parked I'd prefer to do it from the fuel level meter opening on the top of the tank. Does anyone know where you can hire an approved pump to syphon out the tank? Also where you can get a large plastic jerry cans or similar suitable for transporting 60 litres of fuel.

Water and K-Jetronic engines do not mix, at all, not one little bit. I suggest you

1. Drain the tank off
2 Change the fuel filter
3. Refill with fresh fuel
4. Take the car for a good run

If you leave it, the water will cause rust in the system, cause blockage of the fuel filter, block the fuel injectors and potentially require that the metering head be replaced / rebuilt.

Having had my tank out a couple of times I would recommend draing by removing the outlet to the pump. It comes out at a reasonable speed and gives you a little more control of the situation. If you go for the syphon a top tip to avoid a mouthful of fuel each time is to run a peace of string through you syphon hose, attach a piece of foam rubber to the end. Place that end of the hose into the tank and once it is immersed in the fuel pull on the free end of the string. This draws fuel up with the foam rubber in a near vacuum and starts the syphon process.

Faced with the prospect of evacuating 50 plus litres of fuel into drums on my newly laid drive and then having to transport it for disposal (assuming I can find somewhere legit to take it). It seemed worth checking out getting it done at a a garage.

The only decent local garage (West Essex Vehicle Engineering shut a couple of years ago when the owner and general mechanical genius Chris Sherwin sold up) - u can't trust the others to change a set of plugs and it could get really messy if there were serious problems later as a result of them charging without doing the work.

So I rang JZ Machtech who have looked after the car in my period of ownership (new clutch, re-ground flywheel, turbo track rod conversion, gearbox re-build and reversion to standard shift lever).

JZ are great. Despite being really busy they agreed to drain the tank and change the fuel filter for approx £130 plus vat plus parts (fuel filter probably). The RAC didn't have a problem with level loading the car to JZ despite the cause of the contamination.
