Water in the oil

Can you advice? I own a 1990 944 S2 3.0. I have found a small amount of water in the engine oil dip stick tube. But I can,t see any in the rocker cover. There is no overheating and on exective water usage (at the moment!!!!). A friend has adviced an engine flush. However, am I correct in saying she's blown a head gasket?

Hi paul, it doesn`t sound good mate this maybe an early indication that the head gasket is on the way out, how does the underside of the oil filler cap look a bit chocolate milk shakey goop is also an indicator of a failing head gasket in most cases, whats the miles on the car, and have you had it long?[:eek:] i have a 944s 88 2.5 be patient the other guys on here are a lot more clued up than me and will be happy to help, they have helped me no end with my problems and came through every time[:)]
 
If you do lots of short journeys or if its standing around alot then you will get condensation in the engine at this time of year, Its not unusual for some of this to collect on the dipstick or in the filler neck. Sometims just backing off the filler cap 1/8th of a turn from full tight will allow it to clear. On the other hand it could be early signs of HG failure or a cracked head or block. I would monitor the situation (if the coolant isnt dropping its probably fine) and if you want piece of mind get a compression and leakdown test done. It is also possible to check for combustion gases in the coolant with the correct kit.

Flush the oil out using one of the cheaper 0w/50s, then fill up with a good quality oil. Top the water up to the mark, and take it for a run. If the waterlevel drops and you again find water on the dipstick then something is amiss. Engines, when they cool suck in a small amount of air which includes water vapour. We have had some very damp days lately and it could be that you are just not drving the car for long enough to dry the condensation out. Get a compression test done and have the cooling system pressure tested. This will tell you loads and remove a lot of the guesswork.
 
Hi Rob, There is nothing in the filler cap at the moment. I have had the car for about 4 months and used it every day. This has just happened so I have taken the car off the road until it is fixed!! She,s a Cab so in this weather I am not happy!!!! Thanks for your help.
 
I must agree with tony and john, i have heard cases of condensation build up, like he said keep an eye on it or get it tested, flishing out sounds a good thing too do.but one thing you dont want is it going pop on the side of the road, leave the smoke trails to the burning rubber,
 
Thank for your help lads. I'll get the engine flush through and pressure tested, while keeping my fingers crossed!!![:)]
 
At the beginning of every winter we post a warning not to worry unduly if you start seeing milkshake or water vapour on your dipstick and filler cap especially if your car does short journeys.

My own S2 and Turbo filler caps are currently covered in thick oily milkshake just as they have been for the past 8 winters- it's totally normal.

Of course it could be the first sign of HG problems [8|]
 
Paul. Thank you for this. I am a new PCGB member and have never used a forum before! I have owned a 1986 944 2.5 for the past 3 years but never had this before... However the car always did long trips. The S2 has had some short journeys recently, that has meant she has only just got to temperature.
