Water Ingress ................

Richard Savage

New member
It rained a tad here in Wiltshire this morning. OK - It came down like Stair Rods!

After a six / eight mile drive, but not for the first time, I found a reoccurrence of water in both Rear Footwells.

It appears after the vehicle has been stationary for a while, rather than immediately, from beneath the carpet where shown arrowed.

It has happened following a trip through a flooded road, on an otherwise dry day, so I'm suspicious that the water might be coming up from the road, rather than down from somewhere.

There is suficient quantity to run across the floor pan, if the car is parked on a slope.

Consider - The problem may not be Cabriolet, or even 3.2 Specific!

Hmmm

Mine will leak and drain into the rear footwells via seat rails if outside in a prolonged heavy shower - has to be heavy though and has to be longer than 20 mins or so. Comes in through windscreen top seal which has gone spongy - just bought the new one from Porsche for £95 and will change soon.

Coming up through floor - could it be through unsealed gear coupler hatch in rear footwell 'tunnel' - have they got those on G50 cars? Are you sure it's not roof Richard, those seals usually wearing out about now...have you tried using the hose on it and having a look at door seals too, round by locks get quite tired so could be travelling down B-post?

Anyone got any ideas - has to be same floorpan on coupes hasn't it?

John - Hummmmmmmm indeed!

Thanks for the response to my e-mail and for reprising my thread.

I like to think that my Porsche is 'unique' but this particular problem is stretching the point!

I've had another look at the problem this morning, and, having pulled back the trim [ by 'eck, that's some serious adhesive! ] discovered the plastic 'grommet' shown.

There's a very reasonable chance that this is where the water is getting into the car [ I'll need to wait until I drive out in on a very wet / flooded road again! ] but if so, how is it getting to the other side of it in the first place?

I've also had a look underneath .....................

.............. and discovered these little puppies. There are several of them, so if they are drains, since they are clearly 'loose fitting', then on a flooded road could wateralso enter?

There are also rubber drain plugs at the rear of the footwells. I found one missing last week.

Hi Richard,

I looked under my car yesterday with your earlier post in mind and there are rubber grommets/plugs.One of mine looked a bit loose! In my experience, if there's a hole, water will get in somehow and usually a lot more than you think.
I am assuming of course that you haven't been driving with the roof off....again[;)]

Graham - See my previous Post.

You're right about water though. Give it half a chance and it's in there. Just wish it wasn't in my foot wells. Given the rain I drove out in today, as you can probably imagine ............ yep, I've got some more! []

I wouldn't mind betting there are a few 911 owners out there right now checkin' under their carpets and floor pans!

PS - No, I haven't been driving 'Topless'. My wife is much more likely to do that, she's more ........... adventurous than I. Look out for a Flash Red VW Karman Golf GTI!
