Water leak

After only 600 miles in my new baby, this is a tad disappointing. BUT, if there is a good side to it, it appears not to be the rad. Instead it looks (head on the floor squinting up through the lower front grills) to be coming from a point in front of the rad on the RHS.

Is there anything obvious around the top of the rad and in front of it that I should suspect ?

How difficult is it to get the badge panel off - I assume that's the only way to get to this area

It's not coming from the rad drain plug which is on the bottom right hand side as you stand in front of the car is it?
They do leak at the seams though as they're part plastic.I changed mine last year for a new one (about £170 from porscheshop if i remember right) as the right side seam was leaking.It's not a difficult job to do,just time consuming and a bit fiddly if you haven't access to ramps (as i haven't).
You won't get in through the badge panel - i had to remove the plastic under tray below the engine and once everything is undone (hoses, screws on the top of the rad, fan came off also etc) the rad lifts up slightly and then drops down to remove - be carefull not to lose the two rubber mounts that sit under the rad.
As say it can be done it's just a bit harder if you've no access to ramps - i jacked mine up and placed the front on stands to do it.

No, it's coming from around he top of the rad, but further forward so that the drips don't run down the rad but fall in front of it. Could be the top tank if it sticks out an inch or so forward of the matrix.

I've checked out the workshop manual and can see how to get the badge panel off now - will this let me see the top of the rad ? Obviously I don't want to get it out (using your instructions, thanks for those) unless I know it's the culprit. [;)]
 
Here's my car with the badge panel and intercooler removed. Your pic shows the front of the metalwork that the bonnet catch engages with, and it's this same bit of metal that I'm seeing quite a lot of water coming through. So I'm going to run with my initial guess that it's not the rad but something above / in front of it that's leaking and have the badge panel off anyway. It's possibly a waste of time, but it's going to be a waste of much less time than dropping the rad out if the problem isn't there.

I've changed my mind - it's the radiator that's leaking [:mad:][:'(][&o]

Before I give my wallet to Porscheshop, has anyone got any suggestions on where to buy a new one for less than £170 ? [8|]

Also, I don't fancy doing the replacement myself. Should I risk sticking the modern equivalent of Radweld into my lovely car so I can drive it to a place of proper fixing, or will this just gunk up my engine and cause trouble later on ?

Any advice gratefully received.

Both will be +vat but see the post at the top of the forum for 10% off at eurocarparts.
 
I took mine to a local radiator shop, they re-built with a new core etc was 70 inc vat. And a top job tooo
 
So water is coming from under the driver's seat or from the drain hole under the bonnet ?
 
Rain water drains off the windscreen, under the rear of the bonnet and into the tray drain hole. Most of this water drains out onto the ground behind the front wheel but a small amount ends up under the drivers seat. I need to spend some time with a torch and small mirror to see if I can identify the route the water is taking. It must be down the sill though as the floor is just a single skin.
 
If it's where I think you are describing, you may cure it by simply clearing out the old dead leaves and other similar crud that has probably built up in the drain holes at the end of the panel under the windscreen. They build up fairly quickly, and prevent the water from draining the way it is meant to ... with the result you are experiencing.

The stuff you remove makes good compost. Just so you know. They said it on Gardeners Question Time, so it must be true!

The drain holes are easy to spot. In the area behind he bulkhead but in front of the windscreen where the wiper mechanism is (i think it's called the scuttle), you will see the seam where the vertical wall of the inner wing meets the horizontal panel of the scuttle. You'll see that the seam kinks up and creates a small hole. This is the drain away for water into the inside of the wing. Make sure this area is not obscured and try to poke something down the hole to make sure it is clear. To test you can pour some water into that area to see if it drains out.
 
As the guys have said it sound like the drain is partially blocked. If it isn't then I can only think you have a porous seam in the scuttle, so let's hope it's crud.

I was slow as I only have on hand to type with, and apparently quite some amount of hardware in my arm. Hurts like a barsteward any way.
 
Thanks for the replies guys but there are no leaves blocking any drain holes. As I said, the water drains away through the scuttle drain hole and most of it ends up on the ground, however some finds its way into the sill and then out under the drivers seat. I think there must be a leak at the front end of the sill where it meets the rear of the front wheel arch. I will have a closer look this weekend.
