water leak ....

...have been getting a build up of water in the boot, for which I blamed the rear hatch seal (was also rattling) so have replaced it and adjusted the catches at either side but sadly I came back to the car after a heavy rain (the one day it didnt have a cover on!) to find the boot full of water again!

It seems that the rear light clusters are letting water in (must have been raining horizontally agina!!) - should there be a seal around them? or do i need to get the silicone gun out??

There should be a seal around them, but you can use mastic etc. Richard on here occasionally who makes clear lenses for 944s (among others) says Dum Dum putty is the best he has found for the job. The actual seal is available from an OPC on a roll, but it's expensive for what it is.

Someone will probably correct me but don't the hatch lock holes also act as drain holes, and there is a drain pipe leading from each one inside the hatch down and out through the floor?
Check the drain pipes are actually there...

That's right; I forgot to mention that - there should be a plastic pipe pushed on a nipple on the bottom of each latch housing and leading into the wells either side of the main boot floor for drainage. If they are missing then there is an open hole from the latch housing into the boot.

ah yes there are white plastic pipes - i took them off and then cleaned all the gunk out - very strange drainage system!

also noticed that one of the number plate lights has actually been blanked off and painted over (very poorly!) - do I need both for the MOT?

Strictly speaking, yes - I had a Golf fail 'cos one of the bulbs was blown, many years ago.

(But if the MOT chap is not that sharp, or bothered, I'm sure it will pass. If not, I know of a good place that does MOT's by post - send them a photo of your car and the old certificate, and they'll send you a nice new certificate.)

Oli.

MOT's by post eh??

Interesting new approach lol - is there a fee for such a service?
