water leek.... I wish!

Well I called the AA out at the weekend thinking they would replace the hose. The mechanic opened the bonnet and sighed. 'Your cylinder head has gone mate... very expensive'

The water resevoir is full of oil and water sludge so I think he is probably spot on, but could it just be the gasket? If so does anyone have any idea on how much this will cost?

Dosen't the 944 have a water / oil cooler arrangement ? I seem to remember sometime in the dim and distant past the seals going on mine and causing similar problems. The seals are cheap and easy to replace from what I remember.

If you have a lux almost definately the gaskets in the oil cooler, (it is a heat exchanger arrangement using the coolant to cool the oil) They are a known failure and the early ones (orange) should be replaced by green ones. Usually only the oil gets into the coolant not the other way round.
A quick search on the web (Porsche 944 oil cooler seals) should find lots more info,

Thanks for your reply phil... A friend (an old 944 driver) has just said the same thing! He is 99% sure the cylinder head will not be warped and it will probably be a seal.

Hope so, I do know that Martyn C had a Cylinder head problem on his S2, but the cooler seals are more common.
