Water pump replacement

Question for Richard.

Do you have details on how to change the water pump.. What thoughts on using after market parts; e.g. KWP rather then original Porsche? Should I replace the thermostat at the same time? The car is a 2003 996 Tip.

I did mine recently, 1999 C2, take your time, buy plenty of Porsche coolant, buy a genuine Porsche pump, the difference in money is so little, get new jubilee clips for the hoses and also order the metal gasket, you have to trim it, but it is only 3 snips. It is very easy, bleeding the system after is not as hard as it first appears, keep the car jacked up, fill very slowly, leave, then fill some more, leaving the cap off, keep going until you cannot get anymore in, lower the car, start and run up to temp with the cap on, but the bleed open, if you want to top up running you will need to pick the revs up whilst filling, east on a 99 as its cable throttle but you may need the help of an assistant. The really drive on a short trip, leaving the bleed open and check on occasions, you may need to top up a little but it is only a little. Re the thermostat not a bad time to do it as it is right in front of you.
 
The book says you have to support the engine and remove the rear engine mount carrier. However, maybe Gary can say if that is really necessary.

Richard is correct that you support the engine, but it is very light pressure as you remove the rear mount, I used a bottle jack and some wood, you know when its correct as the bolts come out easy.
 
Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions. Should I replace the thermostat? The water pump actually failed and all the coolant leaked out. Is it a sensible precaution to replace or is it overkill?

I checked out YOUTUBE and found a post from our friends across the pond. Looks simple enough!!!!! Only problem I have is that my engine bay has some additional tubes coming into the airbox, just before it joins the throttle body. Could be venturi tube?

I would do the low temperature thermostat fitting at the same time if it was my car - not a difficult job and given you are draining some of the coolant off its seems daft not to?
