Water pump

On recent journey in my pampered 2000 Boxster S I noticed that the red warning LED next to the Temp guage was flashing (although the temp guage itself was fine.) When I stopped I noticed that what looked like smoke was coming from the side vents. I looked at the manual and topped up the coolant reserviour which had suprisingly showed empty??? (Full service in Dec')
As I put the water in it poured out from underneath the car. My trusted specialist said it was o.k. to drive to his garage 1.5 mls away so he could check the prob.
Basically the water pump had had it! (He showed me) He replaced said item at a cost of £210 + vat...
Car seemed fine on drive home but 2 days later Temp guage LED was flashing and coolant level had dropped a lot (although no obvious leak this time.)
Specialist said this was prob' a result of some air in the cooling system and I should top up and have a drive to see if level remained constant this time.
I put 1.5 litres in and had a great drive (30 mls etc) but on return level was down again requiring a further litre.
Specialist says that as there is obv' still some air in the system this should sort itself out soon but may require a little more topping up.
Has anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks Mike

The garage clearly didnt know about the bleed valve which is underneath the false floor of the oil/water top up area. Take both oil and water caps off and prise up the plastic floor, underneath this is a round raised plastic part with bolts all around it, on top is a pice of metal that is flush to the plastic, pull it up - this is the vent. Put oil cap back on and start the car, let it run for 5 minutes or so and get the water temperature to normal - the thermostat will now be open, as water is pushed around the system the air will be pushed to the vent - if air is still present you will see the water gushing and bubling - keep it running until its just a flow of water - the air should now be out. close the valve and put the plastic floor back in place - job done
