I have always thought that the water pumps on the 986 and 987 engines were different, due to a variation in impeller size. My 2005 987S will need a new pump soon (there is a small amount of play in the bearing) so I've been looking to see if there's a viable alternative to the fairly expensive OE item. I've come across a couple of seemingly reputable companies on the internet who are offering the same pump reference for all Boxster models, from 1998 2.5L up to the latest 3.4L models (and also incidentally Cayman, 996 and 997). Can anyone confirm that the pumps are different, and what in fact does distinguish one from the other? Could it be that the later variant is retrofittable?
