Waterless Coolant

Hello, I am a new member to Porsche GB and have a question on waterless coolant, can anyone comment?

I have a 2007 Boxster S and am considering having Evans Waterless Coolant. I have read some good reports and some not so good reports on this and was hoping to hear from someone who has this in their car. Have you had any problems, did you have a lower temperature thermostat fitted - I have read that engines with this coolant run hotter than water and anti freeze? What does anyone think? all ideas comments welcome, regards Andy

Not heard of it myself. You could seek the opinion of Steve Winter of Jaz Porsche in St. Albans who is accredited with being a technical adviser for the Boxster Register, or maybe your OPC.

Heard of it many times, not sure you need it really as there are no issues with the Boxster engines and overheating/corrosion etc.

Best stick to clean water and top quality AF.

Thanks; is there not a general issue with water as your coolant with aluminium engines? Have you seen the book, '101 projects for your Porsche Boxster'? This states that over time the coolant rust inhibitors deteriorate and the water and anti freeze mix destroy your engine. The solution in this book is to regularly refresh the coolant (every 2 years). I was interested in Evans coolant solution as it is a 'one off fix', expensive, but once in a lifetime expense. I would be willing to do it if I can hear from a Porsche owner who has it and, has experienced no technical issues, such as running hot, radiator fans working harder and failing or, coolant pump issues (Evans has a higher viscosity than water and anti-freeze mix, resulting in the pump working harder). Anyone out there who has this please comment.

Andy,

Just to say that I seem to recall that there was a very informative article on this subject in Porsche Post some time ago if you want to trawl through back numbers available on this site under the NEWS & EVENTS heading.

I have used this waterless coolant in my motorcross race bikes, had problem with water spitting out of overflow when engine was running only when stopped/not moving(no fan on radiator)(very high performance engine 250cc two stroke 50bhp!) for a road car I would stick to normal water(demin or de ionised) and antifreeze, we test high performance engines for jaguar and all we use is this standard mix ,porsche coolant is vw g12 spec and should be ok for 5+ years before it needs changing.(I have also heard that Porsche coolant is lifetime coolant and will last lifetime of vehicle) using waterless coolant in a Porsche will cost a fortune as depending on model it will need between 18 and 23 litres.

thank you Rich mich, sorry for late reply. Yes I think you are probably right on using Porsche product. I was quoted around £600.00 to change as Boxster's hold a lot of coolant. regards Andy
